At the beginning of next month, the current-gen version of NBA 2K21 will launch on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4, even though the current, real-life NBA season hasn’t concluded yet.

Earlier this week, the latest trailer for the current-gen version of 2K21 was released, and it detailed the new neighborhood, which will now be a re-skinned beach location instead of, well, a neighborhood. It also previewed the game’s MyCareer mode story, which will see your custom character start out in high school and work his way through college, and eventually the NBA.

There’s still no release date attached to the next-gen version of NBA 2K21, nor has 2K released any gameplay footage for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions. Of course, when we made the transition from the last generation to the current generation, 2K drastically improved the visuals while maintaining stellar gameplay, but we’ve yet to see if they’ll do the same when their annual NBA game makes its way onto next-gen consoles, presumably later this year.

As for when the game could be released on next-gen consoles, well, typically the game releases around the same time that the real-life season is going to start. But, due to circumstances that were out of the league’s control, they delayed their regular season, and are currently still in the first round of their post-season. But, most are predicting that the 2020-2021 NBA season will begin around Christmas, so it’s likely that the next-gen version of NBA 2K21 is released sometime in December.

So far, the reactions to the current-gen trailers have been mixed, which has been the case for several years now. But, despite the complaints about how 2K pushes out the same game every year with little to no changes haven’t prevented the series from being a gigantic financial success, as it’s regularly one of the best-selling games each year.

It’ll be interesting to see if NBA 2K’s streak of financial success will continue with this year’s current-gen release, or if most of its players choose to wait until the next-gen version is released. But, if you are someone who is going to buy both versions, then you’ll need to buy the $100 version of the current-gen release to have things like your MyCareer, MyTeam, and VC carry over to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions.

The current-gen version of NBA 2K21 will be released on September 4.
