The Last of Us: Part 2 was a major commercial success for Naughty Dog and Sony.

The PlayStation 4 exclusive title sold over 4 million copies in its first three days of release.

Typically, when a modern game sees that level of success, the studio wants to capitalize on it and make some extra money with story-driven DLC.

This was definitely the case for Marvel’s Spider-Man, also a PlayStation 4 exclusive, that saw a slew of episodic DLC releases, which rounded out the game’s story.

However, that reportedly will not be the case for Th Last of Us: Part 2.

Neil Druckmann, the writer and director of The Last of Us: Part 2, said that there were “no plans” for any kind of large scale story-driven DLC to follow he events of the game.

This is surprising given that the game’s predecessor, The Last of Us, had released a story-driven DLC adventure called Left Behind, which had been well received by gamers and critics alike. That story had been a part of the original game’s season pass.

“No,” Druckmann said, when asked about upcoming DLC, “with Last of Us I think we had some Season Pass or something that said ahead of time we have some story DLC. No, there’s no plans for that with The Last of Us: Part 2.”

That doesn’t mean that Naughty Dog has no plans to expand on the game’s world. It has been announced that the game will be expanded with some form of multiplayer mode in the future.

Naughty Dog noted that the game was receiving a separate online experience sometime down the road through a standalone title.

It is possible that this multiplayer game in the world of The Last of Us could appear on the PlayStation 5, given that the days are ticking down toward the console’s holiday release.

The Last of Us: Part 2 will be playable on the PlayStation 5, as thousands of PlayStation 4 games will be reverse compatible with the new system.

While a commercial blockbuster for Naughty Dog and Sony, The Last of Us: Part 2 was critically panned by many gamers. Praise was heaped on the game’s story from a large number of critics, but the game’s story seemed to alienate many longtime fans of the series.

The Last of Us is also being adapted into an HBO Original Series, with Druckmann serving as one of the showrunners, along with members of the Chernobyl creative team.
