Recently, Activision confirmed that they’re still planning to release a new Call of Duty title later this year, and a new leak has hinted at the game’s title and setting.
Earlier this week, a Reddit user named SunnyMatrix posted to the gaming leaks and rumors subreddit, claiming to have inside information regarding the next Call of Duty game. In the post, the user described his inside source as “a source that is involved in primarily screenwriting for television and film, although they sometimes are brought on as a consultant to review storytelling in the videogame industry.”
The Reddit user said that, according to his source, the next COD game will be called Call of Duty: Classified, and it’ll be a soft reboot of the Black Ops series. Also, the game could be set in either Vietnam or the Soviet Union, which will focus on stealth, and it could involve conspiracies like the US government’s use of MK-ULTRA.
It’s also possible that the game will primarily take place in Vietnam, and it’ll have a few offshoots in various Cold War locations.
As for the game’s main narrative, well, according to the Reddit user, it’ll focus on the uncovering of covert Soviet operations and human experimentation. The user also claims that the story has undergone a ton of rewrites, which echoes the reports from Kotaku that there have been a ton of issues with COD 2020’s development.
Last year, Infinity Ward and Activision decided to officially reveal the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare soft reboot at the end of May, and after its reveal, they slowly rolled out all of the gameplay details before it was released in October.
If the next Call of Duty game is still right on schedule, then we should expect to see an official reveal by either June or July.
The next Call of Duty game is being developed by Treyarch, who were the developers behind the following COD titles: Big Red One (2005), Call of Duty 3 (2006), World at War (2008), Black Ops (2010), Black Ops II (2012), Black Ops III (2015), and Black Ops 4 (2018).
Originally, Sledgehammer Games was going to develop the next installment of Call of Duty, but the aforementioned development issues forced Activision to make a change. Normally, Infinity Ward, Treyarch, and Sledgehammer Games alternate, with each of them being tasked with developing a new COD game every three years.
Unless something changes, the next installment of Call of Duty is right on schedule, which means it’ll be released in either October or November.
