Last month, Tom Holland, who is set to play Nathan Drake in the upcoming Uncharted movie, told IGN that the film adaptation of one of Sony’s hottest IPs is going to begin shooting in four weeks. At the time, it seemed unlikely that the movie was going to begin filming without a director, but Sony has resolved that issue, as they’ve finally chosen a director for the project.
Ruben Fleischer, who is best known for directing 2018’s Venom and Zombieland: Double Tap, will direct the Uncharted movie. Of course, Variety reported back in January that he was Sony’s top choice for the position, so it’s unsurprising to see that he got the job.
In addition to the movie getting a new director, Variety is reporting that three new actors have joined the project: Antonio Banderas, Sophia Ali, and Tati Gabrielle. As of right now, it’s unclear what roles the new actors will have in the upcoming movie adaptation.

In the aforementioned Tom Holland/IGN interview, the actor who is set to play Nathan Drake said that the movie will be a prequel to the video games, so don’t expect to see characters like Elena Fisher or Chloe Frazer appear in the film, as the events of the movie will take place before Nathan Drake met them.
“I think what Uncharted offers that most video games films don’t is that it’s an origin story to the games. So if you played the games, you haven’t seen what’s going to happen in the film,” said Holland while speaking with IGN. And if you haven’t played the games, you’re going to enjoy the film because it’s information that everyone else is getting at the same time. But I’m super excited to make that movie and it’s been a long time coming.”
Holland also told IGN that the script for the Uncharted movie is “one of the best I’ve ever read.” He also said that he thinks that Mark Wahlberg, who is going to play Victor Sullivan, is going to “kill it” as Nathan Drake’s longtime mentor and father figure.
Given that the Uncharted movie will be an origin story, it’ll be interesting to see if Sam Drake, Nathan’s brother who was introduced in Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, will be one of the characters in the film.
According to Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, who wrote the most recent draft of the script, the Uncharted movie will be released in theaters on March 5, 2021.
