With the Sonic the Hedgehog movie being such a big success, as it’s setting new records for video game adaptations, there’s a ton of speculation regarding the future of Sega’s biggest franchise, with the latest rumor suggesting that a major announcement regarding the longtime video game franchise will be made during the South by Southwest convention later this month.

The aforementioned rumor comes via 4Chan, which has proven to be somewhat unreliable when it comes to providing accurate information. Nevertheless, the forum suggests that Sega is preparing to announce a 30th-anniversary collection during the SXSW event, which takes place from March 13 to March 20.

“Sega’s preparing for a big Sonic reveal at SXSW,” said an annomyous 4Chan member. “It will bring most of the 3D mainline Sonic games to current and next-gen consoles.”

Following the release of the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, Sony announced that Sonic Forces will be free to play for PlayStation Plus users during March. Unfortunately, though, the game wasn’t very well-received upon release, as most still prefer 2017’s Sonic Mania, which was the most well-reviewed Sonic titles in years.

Of course, both Sonic Forces and Sonic Mania were released back in 2017, so it’s been a few years since Sega has released a new game in the franchise.

While leaks provided by 4Chan users are often fake, this one seems to make a ton of sense, especially given that the movie has been such a huge success. Until the leak is confirmed, we won’t know which Sonic games will be included in the 30th-anniversary collection, but it’s realistic to assume that all of the Sega Genesis releases will be part of the rumored collection.

It’s also possible that Sega could announce a sequel to Sonic Mania, which, as previously mentioned, was widely considered to be the best Sonic game since the Sega Genisis days. Another possibility is that a sequel to Sonic Mania will be included in the rumored 30th-anniversary collection.

As of this writing, Sega hasn’t teased anything regarding a new Sonic title, nor have they teased an anniversary collection. But, with the success of the movie, you’d have to assume that there’s a new Sonic title in the works.

The 4Chan leaker didn’t provide a specific date for the 30th-anniversary announcement, so if the user is providing accurate information, the announcement will be made sometime between March 13 and March 20, so we won’t have to wait long to see if there’s a new Sonic game in the works at Sega.
