Don’t worry, they’re back up – for now.
Bungie had a bit of a hiccup with their latest patch. In their recent patch – update 2.7.1 – they added a cool new feature where they accidentally deleted player’s materials. Obviously, this hasn’t been received too fantastically, causing the servers to immediately be taken down for emergency maintenance.
After investigating the issue, they identified and applied a fix, but weren’t able to do anything about the loss of items to characters. Instead, they rolled everything back to before the patch – including all of the progress that some may have made during the bugged period.
Due to the rollback:
💠Any progress or purchase made between 8:30-10 AM PST will need to be redone
💠Silver spent during that time will be restored
💠Platform store-purchased Silver bundles will not be affected by the rollbackMore Info: https://t.co/PBkzWR7rXf

“We have rolled all character data back to our most recent backup at 8:30 a.m. Pacific before the issue was introduced,” Bungie wrote on the forums as they announced the rollback. “This will restore any lost materials caused by the issue, but players will lose any progress they made if they played between 8:30 a.m. and 10:20 a.m. when we brought the game down for maintenance. Any purchases made using Silver or Bright Dust during this window will need to be repurchased. Any Silver spent or purchased will be restored.”
So at the end of the day, it’s really a “no harm, no foul” situation. Yeah, Bungie definitely messed up, and no one is too big a fan of a patch that randomly drains your inventory. But when it’s all said and done, the only thing anyone lost was a bit of time. While some people may have had their inventory drained, it was all restored with the rollback. It’s definitely a hassle, but no one lost anything more than a couple of hours of progress – and they only lost that progress if they chose to play during the two hours that a game-breaking bug was active.
Any purchases of silver have been restored, so no one is out any money. It’s also always a bummer to have an entire day where you can’t play the game you want to play, and that’s certainly a shame, but it isn’t the end of the world. While the forums may be filled with angry fans wondering if Bungie is ran by a single rabid mongoose, more sensible fans are just happy to have their lost materials back.
If anything, props to Bungie for acting so fast to bring down the servers and fix the issue. But make no mistake, this isn’t the kind of issue that should be happening often, and given that Destiny 2 is no stranger to massive glitches and bugs, it doesn’t seem that Bungie has their finger down on quality control just yet either.
