Hidetaka Miyazaki, who’s largely responsible for FromSoftware games such as Bloodborne and the Dark Souls series, recently revealed a new project at E3 which is being called Elden Ring. The game, which is being described by Miyazaki as the natural evolution of their popular titles, will be in collaboration with Game of Thrones author and creator George RR Martin.
During a recent interview with IGN, Hidetaka Miyazaki explained why Elden Ring is the “natural evolution” of Dark Souls.
“With a larger world, new systems and action mechanics inevitably become necessary,” Miyazaki explained.“In that sense, I think that Elden Ring is a more natural evolution of Dark Souls.”
One of the key differences between Elden Ring and the Dark Souls series is that players will be allowed to travel throughout the world on horseback, which hasn’t been a feature that FromSoftware has included in their previous titles. Moreover, players will be able to engage in combat while they’re mounted, which will make the game’s combat feel more open and not so confined to tight, dark spaces.
Miyazaki also talked about George RR Martin’s role in Elden Ring, saying that the author has been creating all of the lore for the game. Essentially, Martin’s role is to lay the groundwork and history for the world that players are going to step into when Elden Ring is released, while Miyazaki’s team has been working on how to fit those events within the game’s timeframe. It’s also been reported that both Martin and Miyazaki have worked independently, but despite that, they obviously do have a good working relationship.
Elden Ring won’t have a pre-set protagonist, as players will be able to create their own character, much like in FromSoftware’s other titles. However, this game will be far more open, and while it certainly won’t have a linear story with pre-rendered cut scenes, it’ll be a lot more story driven than any of the developer’s previous games.
As of this writing, FromSoftware hasn’t revealed the release date for Elden Ring, nor have they given a specific timeline for its release. For now, all that’s been revealed about the title is just that, its title, as there’s only been one brief teaser trailer that’s been released.
The project has been rumored for quite some time, so it wasn’t much of a surprise to see it at E3. Whether or not we’ll see FromSoftware expand upon the title with a new trailer later this year remains to be seen.
