It’s safe to say that Marvel’s Avengers, the upcoming title from Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics, rocked the show floor at E3 2019. Going into the show, nobody knew what to expect from the game. Despite the original teaser being released almost two years ago, little was known about the project outside of a few leaks that happened only days before the big reveal.

All eyes were on Square Enix’s press conference, which featured the first-ever story and gameplay details, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive.

Now, Crystal Dynamics is building the hype even more, as the head of the studio, Scott Amos, has stated the upcoming game is “the biggest thing we’ve ever done.”

Crystal Dynamics is certainly no strange to huge games, as the company’s history will show. From the studio’s early days working on Gex and the Legacy of Kain franchises, to the more recent Tomb Raider reboot, their games have always been big, explosive affairs. But with the upcoming Marvel’s Avengers, the company is going bigger than ever before, with plans to continue the game long after release.

The development team has been very open about their love of the source material, and bringing the Avengers to life in the world of video games has proven to be a daunting task, indeed, but the company is giving it their all. The main focus for the team has been to deliver a game that will continue to evolve over the next few years.

Aside from a full story-drive single-player campaign, the game also features an extensive online co-op mode, allowing players to team-up and take on mini-campaigns. This is, after all, the Avengers, and team-ups are a core part of the adventure.

Crystal Dynamics promises years of free content, coming in the form of new stories, locations, and even an ever-growing roster of heroes to play as. Not only will new characters be added, the team also wants each character to feel unique, not just in combat style, but in player customization as well. Each hero is customizable, from their look to the gear they have equipped, allowing for players to adapt their heroes to their own personal tastes.

The team is also taking strides to make sure that nobody will feel left out. Amos clarified by saying “99% of the stuff we are adding is playable single-player, but it’s also co-op enabled. Now that you have gone through that story campaign that sets up the stakes in the world, the next step is saying there’s all this stuff to do. Global threats are ever escalating, new levels, new heroes showing up at no additional cost.”

Marvel’s Avengers is set for release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, and Google Stadia on May 15, 2020.
