On December 15th, at 8:30 AM PST, the beloved game Minecraft is going to have a live stream along with the well-known streamer Maya Higa and all the money collected will be donated to Conservation International. A $5 donation during the live stream will also grant access to a limited item Earth Head that can be used in the Character Creator. The announcement stirred up a lot of excitement among the gamers and almost immediately, there was the usual outpour of technical complaints, along with the requests of the community.
Minecraft just revealed the news and it is certainly one of those things you should be thrilled about. Maya Higa is doing a live stream for charity and, in addition, she always brings the goodness—so it is a positive vibe around. The catch is you are going to be a part of it, donating $5 to Conservation International and that you get this unique Earth Head thing for your avatar as a reward. It is really a nice little cosmetic; plus, it is for a good cause so it is basically a win-win situation, you know what I mean?
The replies from the Minecraft community are another story as usual. It’s like a mini-version of the whole player base in one tweet thread. There are the hype people, like pixel☃.˚❆˖ ࣪. who just couldn’t hold back, exclaiming, “yaaay !! Maya & minecraft ?! 🙂 I’m there”. Then Glitchy 🪄 was super positive and said the head looks amazing and Maya’s streams are full of energy. Pixel Throne dubbed it a “win-win,” which, indeed, it is. Playing for a good cause? That’s not something you can ever argue with.
Then, on the other side, you have the… let’s call them the passionate feedback crew. And by passionate, I mean they are voicing some grievances. A lot. The hard part for Mojang has been that quite a few replies are simply begging them to fix the bug in Bedrock Edition. The user trixmat605 was extremely unfiltered: “Bedrock has been down for 5 days, literally, what are you guys even getting paid for at that office?” Crewposter just uploaded a GIF everywhere with the text “Fix Bedrock.” It’s definitely a mood. A stubborn one.
And the typical Java vs. Bedrock chasm is also being heard. It would not be a Minecraft announcement if that weren’t the case. Krieg Sargent wondered why it is always “Bugrock” that gets the cape challenges, claiming that Java was here first. LoveOfPugsley felt they “totally missed out on having a world cape” and that’s “where the real donations would’ve been,” adding #JavaOverBedrock. It’s a discussion as old as the two editions themselves and it looks like there’s no getting rid of it.
Oops! What was I trying to say? Oh yes, the charity stuff. It’s indeed a nice gesture that they are partnering with Conservation International. Richard 🔥 (zorvezz) couldn’t have said it better: “Love seeing the community show up for conservation.” That’s really the core of it. Using the massive power of Minecraft and streaming for a good cause. Michael (themichaeltbh) simply replied, “okay this is cool as hell, W Mojang.” Sometimes, it’s just that simple.
But the chaos in the replies was so good that it could not be left unmentioned. Some people want free Java accounts and it is apparently day 4 of their asking. MarcyStudios 🏳️⚧️ is still waiting for their copper cape that was promised during a past promotion; they redeemed the code but have not received it yet. Someone else offered to give them the code, which is… a solution, I suppose? Papyrus said that after “5 kills with spear on pire survival” they did not get a cape. The details are unclear to me, but the annoyance is unmistakable.
Aside from this, there were just random and hilarious tangents. TAlexjazz59977 saw the promo image and said, “Hey! Why don’t you just add all the fish from the picture to the game?” Can you imagine the hype about that? Someone posted a GIF of a guy looking puzzled, captioned “Familiar face 🤔”. Then a user posted a picture of a modded fish that looked oddly real for Minecraft and then another person said that they should add such fish to vanilla because they would fit perfectly. The community’s train of thought is really strange.
And of course, the international flavor aspect is there too. Eyseric tweeted in Turkish, “5 dolarım olsa yemek yerim”; the translation literally reads “If I had 5 dollars, I would buy food.” Quite a mood for the economic situation, indeed. So what is the final word? Minecraft is collaborating with Maya Higa for a charity event.
