Fresh news from Monster Hunter Wilds sent the communities literally into a frenzy, and that too, with corn! That pun better have had your ears getting pinched if you didn’t get it. The most strangely loved joke weapon, namely the Cornpopper Gunlance, is gone with the winds once again as an Event Quest Rewards weapon in World. The actual quest shall be launched on the 22nd of July, at 11 p.m. PDT (or 1 a.m. BST on the 23rd for the European chaps), and the reactions we are witnessing… well, they are corny indeed.
The Cornpopper Gunlance, anyone who has experienced the golden graces of the game since forever, is exactly that: a gunlance which looks like a huge ear of corn. It had been part of quite a long-standing tradition of joke weapons in the series, standing shoulder to shoulder with names such as the Parasol Greatsword and Beer Mug Dual Blades. Probably not the most efficient thing to wield in any fight, but certainly not the one most voice in the memory.
The official Monster Hunter account tweet was sheer trolling: “Chatacabra: The Cornpopper Gunlance in #MHWilds isn’t real, it can’t hurt you.” Spoiler: It probably CAN hurt you; gamers are already gearing up for their corn-themed hunts.
And the replies? Utter chaos! Some responses, like the one from Melavi, just said “It’s corn!” with reference to the famous “Corn Kid” meme, whereas others, like Big Sister Franziska, drew long and spirited debates regarding whether it was the same Cornpopper from Monster Hunter Rise (it’s not; it’s way older). Then there was CaptainCorn, who stated with pride, “I will be partaking in this corn-themed event quest,” and honestly? I second that.
Then, the question everybody is really about: Will there be more corn weapons? Alsen99 outright said: “Will there be other corn-themed weapons?”; honestly though, Capcom, we need to know. Corn Dual Blades? Corn Hammer? The possibilities are endless, and the people demand this one.
That said, no Monster Hunter announcement would ever go wrong if it didn’t stir up some… interesting opinions. MILFHYPERBOREA jibed at the forthcoming memes of hunters shoving the Cornpopper where the sun don’t shine whilst Naraotor had a more solemn image of pairing it with the Akuma set for supreme silliness. And who could forget Joycon_Jay begging to have “the best shelling in the game” for the meme value?
But, other than being a source of merriment, it’s a clever move by Capcom. Event Quests giving away unique weapons (especially ridiculous ones) are all-time hits, and bringing back a classic like the Cornpopper, in this case, would be the best way to honor the veterans. Keeping the community busy and interested as we all await Wilds news is a great move—because, honestly, we are still starving for more news.
So mark your calendars, sharpen your corn… I mean, hunting prowess, and get ready to “Put Up A Stink” on July 22. Meme-worthy or just an opportunity to whack monsters with a giant corn cob, this is one Event Quest you simply can’t miss. And maybe, just maybe, this might awaken a whole corn-based weapon line-up. A hunter can dream.
For now, the Monster Hunter community will keep clowing (corn-ing, if you will) until the big day. Because if there is one thing that we have learned, is that gamers will not miss a chance to meme—especially when corn is involved.
