Blizzard put an unusual test to the Overwatch community: can you name the character just from the sounds of their weapon? The official Overwatch Twitter account took up the responsibility of teasing the fans with a video of four weapon sounds for testing their knowledge. The answers went haywire: some were showing off their knowledge while others completely failed.
First and foremost, these sounds were pure, clear, and Overwatch all the way. Amazing sound design allows a player, after long hours of playtime, to scroll through a catalog of gunfire, melee, or ability noise and instantly identify their hero. So, apparently, not all ears were tuned the same way. While some were going a perfect 4/4 on the quiz, others, with probably thousands of hours in the game, were there confusing Wrecking Ball’s chaingun for Widowmaker’s sniper rifle. Ouch.
@bonesoiree complimented Blizzard for having the best sound design in the whole gaming world; what else can you say? Each weapon sound really has its own personality—from the mechanical clunk of Torbjörn’s rivet gun to the high-pitched zing of Tracer’s pulse pistols—which is half of the ambiance for this game. Even the reload sounds are super recognizable, and missing them would cause confusion, @ItemsENABLED lamented, “I’m SO BAD at this. Especially without the reload sounds.”
Some, however, were not in this boat. Several players were proudly flaunting their perfect scores; @SpiderLennaa simply said, “I got them all 😁,” and @andresepr02 kept it short and simple: “All of them.” Then there was @goldensuga_ow, who joked, “4/4 maybe I’m addicted 🫠”—same.
Here come the… creative guesses. @NotKubilan admitted, “My dumbass said Lifeweaver for Freja because I never use her,” while @Laurastar14 was out there thinking Wrecking Ball was Widowmaker. The pain is real.
Of course, no Overwatch Twitter thread is ever complete without a few demands. @patgames ranted about server issues (“remove brasil server from game, put chile or arg, no more this banana bs”), while @notrllysage begged for the Fearless Juno skin to come back. And @KoalaKeith_? Just screaming into the void: “When’s Summer Games?!?!?!”
But the best thing? It pretty much proved how player-dependence on audio cues is while playing Overwatch. As @DXLR8RSXM put it, “Goes to show how well done and important the audio is in Overwatch!”
How’d you do? If you got them all, congrats—you’re officially an Overwatch sound expert. If you didn’t, maybe spending less time looking at skins and more time listening to the glorious gun sounds is advised. Or just await another Blizzard challenge. Either way, this love-hate relationship of the community with these hard-side guessing games will continue.
And for those still stuck on number three… Definitely NOT Orisa. Just saying.
