In 2014 Worlds Adrift was announced promising a sandbox in the sky for the community crafted by the community. They had huge dreams and massive ambition, but that was not enough. The game is closing down the servers for good in July, but the company is not done making fantastic worlds. All cosmetic items in Worlds Adrift will be free for their last month of operation as the team over at Bossa Studios says goodbye to that world.

Players have been enjoying Worlds Adrift since 2017 as they can craft not only the islands but also their very own airships. Using their grappling hooks and occasionally murdering each other players in the community created their own game within the game.

“Worlds Adrift just hasn’t reached the level of popularity it needs to continue. The challenges that came without ambitious project meant that all our work went into making the game work rather than making it the experience we wanted it to be” said Henrique Olifiers on their announcement to the community. “Creating an MMO like Worlds Adrift is a huge financial commitment and unfortunately, the game is just no longer commercially viable.”

It is sad to see amazing concepts like this fail, but the game remained in Early Access for so long that it was hard for the community to maintain their enthusiasm. Although many enjoyed tinkering and editing their ships, the game lacked story and purpose. There was not much to do once you had your boat, and although some gamers prospered the majority of the community could not hold on.

The company is not done developing games and will take what they learned from Worlds Adrift and the dedicated community that formed there into their future products. Although the game is shutting down, many gamers will carry the memories of their sky pirate adventures for years to come.

The game will have an End of the World party that will kick off the week that the game servers will shut down. Dates for the party and the end of the game are not yet announced although the developers have said that it will be some time in July.
