Alright, so now picture a big angry gorilla against 100 crack soldiers. This isn’t some weird anime storyline – the coolest creators basically went all-in for total nonsense.
Winston versus Soldier 100 streams broke the Internet! Cast members like Sykkuno, Fuslie, TinaKitten, and others split themselves into two ridiculous sides: One lone Winston trying to hang on while 100 Soldiers unload. Things just got… ugly.
These types of custom games evolve the familiar one-and-100 scenario and make it crazy with Overwatch heroes. Winston can be real slippery when that pesky impediment of overwhelming numbers slows him down with his mobility and shields. Which means tons of fun and chaos spurred in the chat.
This custom meets anarchy – the whole premise throws the factory-line model of Overwatch play to the wind. Where its games usually center around comps and strategy; here you have survival instinct fighting sheer numbers. When that Winston bounces around trying not to get fried by 100 Helix Rockets – that is the exact stuff that makes us say, “We love this game.”
Would you believe the creator list would be a ‘who’s who’ of streaming talent? Having personalities like Sykkuno and Fuslie on one side pitted against PeterParkTV and FoolishGamers creates an absolutely ridiculous concoction of genuine plays mixed in with utter nonsense. Honestly, somebody fell off the map at some point. That absolutely happened.
However, it certainly is not the first time ridiculous custom modes have taken Overwatch by storm. Do the 500%-speed Lucio lobbies ring a bell? What about the hide-and-seek games that shattered every conceivable rule? Years after its release, the community keeps finding new ways to reinvent the game. And honestly? We’re here for it.
It’s crazy how this mode works really well from a balance perspective. Winston is tough enough to survive short encounters, but at the slightest moment of hesitation while leaping comes the undoing. On the other hand, Soldiers have to band together – if they all shoot at once, the monkey dies; if they trickle in, he picks them off. Basically, that makes for lovely tension where anything goes.
The best part? Anyone can set it all up now. No mods required, you just gather some friends (or 100 enemies) and tweak some settings on the custom game. But getting 100 people to play Soldier will either be really difficult or the beginning of some rather curious friendships. Maybe try the Overwatch Discord.
As the brighter glow of PvE content for Overwatch 2 start to go away, it is nice to see that players can still come up with something fresh when trying to have fun in the original. Between this and every strange custom game out there, creativity never quits. And now, if you’ll excuse us, we need to go start convincing 99 other people to queue as our soldier army. Anyone?
