Weta Workshop has just announced two limited-edition miniatures for Lara Croft, and well, let’s just say that the Tomb Raider fandom is entirely aloud. The collectibles come from the Ruins Of Revelation and A Deal At The Opera, wherein Lara in one unforgettable moment traverses Egyptian ruins and in the other makes a grand escape away from an opera house. A third tete-a-tete, The Sanctuary Of Flame, is already off the table, with Lara sprinting across molten rock with her twin pistols dug into place.
Otherwise, with all their charm, the reactions from the gamers are mixed, shall I say. Some are just so excited, such as Mateusz Brejnak, who expressed, “AoD figurines look awesome!” Some are not: JAMJOOM GAMER was almost outright negative and invited all to watch a different figure with the provided link while stating, “It’s not as good as this one.”
On pricing, ZANGOJOE nailed it: “First I thought they look pretty good, then I saw the price.” These ain’t cheap. Cory James followed that line of thought via his tweet, “When I saw mini I figured that meant affordable… 😢.” Spoiler: It doesn’t.
Anyway, getting a look at their faces, several gamers pointed out that Lara’s look wasn’t quite right. “What happened to the TR5 Lara’s face 😭,” asked TheKonerProject. Just Some Piggy replied, “Just as disappointing looking as the Underworld statue… how hard is it to properly capture Lara’s looks?” Perhaps joking, Dav ❍ said it was “Not too late to change that face, bestie.”
Then there’s the other end of the line where some believe the worst has a bright silver lining of new Tomb Raider merchandise, albeit a pricey one: “Another is coming soon? SO EXCITED,” tweeted starrituals. Following the sentiment with sarcasm, SmashLara said, “Just wanted everyone to know that I do indeed accept free gifts.” Same, honestly.
While all these statues are being talked about, the cries for actual Tomb Raider game news start: “TR 12 news when??” demanded anixwp as AdaWpng begged for news on “SEASON 2 and LAU remasters.” Basically mood-collector-sports are brilliant, but these gamers want another Lara adventure.
So do they sell? Maybe. Are they perfect? According to the internet, no. However, this much is for sure-Weta Workshop got people talking, which is half the battle in the gaming merch world. Now, if only they’d tweak those faces… perhaps even go down a bit on the price. What say you?
For now, keep an eye on The Sanctuary of Flame. Just maybe third time’s a charm. Or more likely—the internet will roast that one too. Either way, it’s gonna be good.
