So yeah, a pretty massive piece of news just dropped for The Crew franchise via Ubisoft Ivory Tower. Big league. Fifty million players. FIFTY MILLION capitalized. Think about it: the title itself is celebrating two years of the update of The Crew Motorfest this week, double punch.
The official one came straight from The Crew Game’s account, filled with hype emojis from the entire development team, thanking every single player. I guess that player count is insane for a racing game series that had a rough start, huh? Remember the chatter, ‘Damn, that’s a huge map,’ when the first one dropped? And now here we are.
Now wait, what exactly is The Crew? For those living under a rock (no judgment!), it’s Ubisoft’s open-world racing series. First launched in 2014, The Crew 2 followed in 2018, with the most recent iteration being The Crew Motorfest in 2023. Large maps for racing, race packs, cars, and you’re just drifting along with the others. And apparently, 50 million of those people have laid claim to some of that action.
They are not celebrating the past. The tweet kicks off with a tease for the next The Crew Showcase, which, I think, will fill us in on what’s next: Year 3 content for Motorfest? New cars? Events? Everyone is guessing.
And the players… man! The comments are a mixture of unfiltered love and downright serious demands. Like, somebody straight-out-demanded a Lexus LFA. Another one says they’re gonna download it just to claim that Bugatti. Which I guess, yeah, same.
But not all are just car requests. Some want motorcycles, houses (??), free-roam crossplay (pretty please), waverunners, and jetskis. Why not, right? It’s an open world, just throw everything in.
Well, some love too. An F1 player reckoned Motorfest got them hooked-on, which is weird but cool. The other one declared it the best racing game ever. Kudos to the team from a bunch of people too.
Naturally, you can’t have a gaming vibe without the criticisms. One said the recent content was “the laziest recycled content” with “abysmal handling.” Ouch. Another brought up the always-online stuff, saying that having to launch the game online every time is a “pain in the ass.” Fair enough.
One said something about shutting down The Crew 1 recently, saying unless they “unvault” it with an offline mode, why bother? Then they called Motorfest a “mid ripoff of Forza Horizon.” Harsh, but that’s how some people feel, I guess.
But anyway, generally, the feel is positive: you’re excited about that upcoming showcase, hoping for the big plans, and just crazy hype in general over hitting such a huge number.
It’s fascinating to see how the community reacts to these milestones. Some are just happy to be part of it; others have very specific demands. But those are gamers for you. Never satisfied, but still playing.
That is something that definitely Ubisoft Ivory Tower has put in place. Fifty-million players across three games is no small feat, especially within the racing genre that is already packed with Forza, Gran Turismo, Need for Speed… you get it.
And with the showcase just around the corner, it’ll be intriguing to see what they have planned for it. More cars? New modes? Maybe some of that stuff the community’s been complaining about. Probably not though, but you can hope.
For now though, congratulation to the guys. Fifty million speaks for itself. And with Motorfest still going strong, hey, maybe a hundred million next? You can surely dream with them.
If you haven’t tried out The Crew just yet, maybe the time is ripe. With that player base of 50 million, you can surely find someone to race with, or, hey, cruise around Hawaii in Motorfest. Whatever floats your boat. Or car.
And definitely keep your eyes peeled for this showcase. Surely some cool announcements are about to land. New content, maybe some surprises. Or just more cars to collect. Either way, the franchise is still very much alive after all these years. Can’t really say that for very many others.
So that’s the tale. One big number, one big party, and hopefully, one big future. Let’s get back to winning that Bugatti.
