Ubisoft has launched a hotfix as an emergency measure for a troublesome part of Assassin’s Creed Shadows that was crashing the majority of users that made them unable to play the game at all. Updates have a huge size range, Xbox Series X|S users having up to 8GB and PlayStation 5 users just a tiny bit at 0.54GB.

So, in this manner, after all, you decided to play some Assassin’s Creed Shadows after a long day. You double-click the game icon and, bam, the desktop crashed. Or the dashboard. Or whatever it is that your platform does when it gives up on being online. Exactly that happened to the players at the very beginning of the game and the hotfix was released and Ubisoft was quick to fix the problem, I guess??

The patch sizes are quite extravagant and the difference is remarkable. So, Xbox Series X|S users are going to install the 8.23 GB which takes more than an hour, and this is about the time most people spend watching the Big Brother show. In contrast, PS5 users have just 0.54 GB asked of them. PC? That’s again dependent on the vendor—Ubisoft Connect users will download 5.49 GB while Steam patrons will have only 0.27 GB. And Mac users… OMG, 9 GB. That sure requires a lot of disk space!

The reactions of the community have, to say the least, been mixed. Just one player, going by the name of Anarkisti89, quickly commented that the patch killed the Helix store by saying “nothing is loading and you cannot check the stats on anything.” Then they came back saying they had lost all their Helix store items?? That is very unfortunate for the player. Ubisoft Support did respond to the player saying that a support ticket should be filed. At least they are trying to be of assistance?

There is the complete opposite side of the spectrum of the responses, however. A few players think they’ve had enough of the game completely. For example, DarianStarfrog wrote, “It’s official! Yotei has outdone AC shadows in 7 months! It was a flop! The worst in the AC series!” What’s more, there were a lot of replies affirming that Shadows is the worst-selling AC game ever. Still, there is also AmarRaw70520581 who nonchalantly counters with, “I don’t care what you say, I love my shadow I’m enjoying Yashua My chick Stop bitching Ge to level 28” which is… intense I suppose?

The patch size differences not only gave rise to the technical discussions but also made it more interesting. For example, MVittles explained that “Xbox updates are replacing entire files while PS updates are only taking care of the part that requires updating” which is the reason for the different download sizes. Another user, Azdie, just tossed in “PS5 Kraken compression tech” as if it were common knowledge everyone would know right away. Conversely, AlexTownley227 has ridiculed the difference straightaway: “Not even 1GB on PS5 while over 8GB on Xbox LOL how pathetic.”

And then there are the users who are just… curious about completely different things? For example, David17408161 wants to know whether the Tomei mission is now not a problem as they fight with only 4 rations. And there is austinisgoda3 who cannot find their Renaissance robes armor even though they have redeemed it. And DoorJacque3701 wants to know if it is finally possible to switch difficulty levels. It seems that every player has a particular bug laying in wait to be eradicated.

The whole problem in some way reflects the current state of Assassin’s Creed. The first group are the players who are clamoring for Black Flag remasters while the second group are the ones who want Assassin’s Creed Unity at 60FPS on PS5 and the third group is the one still suffering with Shadows technical issues. It’s all chaos but then, this is Ubisoft so what did we expect really?

At least they are trying to fix things? LocoMofo pointed out the irony by stating that “a hotfix to your patch which was meant to fix your game. When your patches require patching you know you are out.” Which… it is very hard to argue against their point. But then, if you are one of those who experienced the problem of not even being able to run the game, may be this hotfix will get you into feudal Japan. Whether you want to go there after all these issues is entirely a different question. The download sizes could be a hassle but at least the crash problem seems to be dealt with. For the time being anyway. Who knows what the next week will bring in terms of problems?
