Yet another cryptic post from Treyarch sent the Call of Duty zombies community into a mad scramble. Dark from the shadows of the weird viral post are the lines “Every direction leads to death.” Along with the #zombies hashtag, the tweet itself bore an image of what looked like some ancient compass from days gone by. The replies? Pure chaos-the post seemed to be much-doubted. Gamers work themselves into a frenzy of sorts while trying to discern what this can mean for their forthcoming Black Ops.
First of all, that image-that weird compass, right? Immediately the theory-crafting began. One person, @RoseCatGurl, wondered if this was what Grey wore around her neck and if it held some significance. Another theory maker in the crowd, @Dcatmaster, interjected what could be deemed wild inferences–“Alcatraz? Afterlife systems in tranzit?” That would, frankly, be a pretty sweet idea. Then @gonzalesramon35 decided to meme it: “Yooo Zetsubou No Shima remastered bucket confirmed,” which, I mean… we can dream.
The real news, though, remains inundated with demands and complaints being thrown into the cacophony. @DbcNico is out here begging Treyarch to “Bring Back carry forward, at least for zombies we want some weapons and use our paid skins.” That’s a whole mood. People spend money on this stuff and then it just gets left behind when the new game drops. It’s a legit complaint.
Have you heard of @CoDBo2W? Cautious. They proclaim, “im gonna be upsetti spagetti if no changes have been made to the point system and if loadouts are still in zombies.” Upsetti spagetti. I am stealing that. But they really do want the classic zombies feel, not what recent systems have been sketchy on.
But not everyone is optimistic about that. @fanonthepoon directly claims “this shit is gonna be so ass i can feel it.” It is harshness. Yet the community has been burned before. And @toodamnicycold just went and asked one of those questions we have all been asking for years: “Why cant treyarch just make a stand alone zombies game”. Really. Why not? It would print money.
The chaos is still dotted with sincere questions related to what this compass stands for in gameplay. @G23Fishy14191 asked if a new special enemy was making the noises, which is a very good guess. @vnf_mr says that they are “Excited for zombies more more open world zombie mode,” which is totally what the compass hints at: bigger, more exploration-based mode. Every direction you choose could lead to a different kind of undead trouble. That would be huge.
And then, of course, there’s the classic infighting of the COD community. @ImfamousWarrior and @niggaclausReal are going at it about stalking accounts and missing the heyday of COD. Peak gamer drama, nothing worth seeing.
One of the funniest replies has gotta be from @makeupaCODZfan, though: “thanks for this one, guys. i love tables.” No clue what that means, but it’s pretty funny. @SensiStar67 tagged MrRoflWaffles (that’s Milo, the zombies lore king), wondering if he could confirm this means a Minecraft crossover/type map. A Minecraft crossover in zombies? Now, that would be something.
Wait, what was I saying? Oh, yeah, the compass. So this little teaser has everybody thinking that the next zombies experience might be more open, more about choosing your path and dealing with the consequences. Which, if true, is a pretty big deal. Classic round-based survival is iconic, but an open world zombies mode? That might be what the mode needs for a fresh change.
And, of course, mixed with all the hype are the usual complaints on the current game. @ChillOutTilly went off on a rant about “camping lowlives” ruining Warzone and wanting a report option for headglitching. Sir, this is a zombies tweet.
One thing is for sure; Treyarch certainly knows how to market. A simple image and creepy tagline, and meanwhile, the entire community is dissecting every pixel of it. Some are hopeful for a return to form, others expecting the worst. But all eyes are on this. The hype for the next Black Ops zombies is very, very real. And if this compass is a hint towards a more exploratory, dangerous world where every choice necessitates consequence… well, count me in. Just maybe don’t make me lose all my cool skins again, okay, Treyarch? Please.
