So, this particular tweet on the official Twitter account of Tomb Raider seemed to have had the community buzzing like a cornered hornet. Certainly, that clip is a really nice one. They uploaded an amazing clip of Lara Croft getting King Midas treatment, i.e., getting turned into solid gold in both the original Tomb Raider and the Anniversary remake. The caption reads: “Everything King Midas touched turned to gold… and Lara Croft was NO exception.” So, it was a charming reference to a classic game moment.
But being gamers, they did not even view it and get on with their lives. No! The replies started working overtime and turned mercilessly into a petition almost at once. As if once every pair of eyes had seen the old-game golden Lara, their unborn minds were instantly wondering about the remasters.
One such response was: One of the earliest replies bluntly asked, “Remasters or not?” by a user named RealTwinPistols. And they weren’t alone. The comment sections have practically become a hoarse plea for an updated rendition of the classic games. User ixdanilo blatantly screamed, “REMASTER LAU PLEASE,” with a crying emoji. Just in case anybody does not know, LAU stands for Legend, Anniversary, Underworld. That was a big era for Lara.
They get that specific. User gustavovidela86 says: “The legend trilogy remastered.” Another user, larasredfield, goes so far as to say, “We don’t want a port, the Lau trilogy deserves a remaster.” Quite a lot of difference, really. A port would simply imply the old game being made to run on new hardware. A remaster, however, is some level of visual upgrade, so maybe higher-res textures or some such. Players want the latter.
However, the LAU trilogy is not the only one through the grapevine. Among those calling themselves the original ones: User LudarkTomb posted twice, “TR1-3 needs a VISUAL PATCH, needs more 3D updates,” and later: “TR1-3 needs visual improvements, they are inferior to TR4-5. PLEASE.” So, there is a part of the fanbase eager to see some polishing done to the original Core Design classics.
But that’s basically what keeps the tweet so interesting: Why post this now? It feels… deliberate. User AJLaJoya caught the vibe immediately, replying, “I see. I SEE! I have a feeling some major TR news is dropping soon.” And maybe they’re right. Game accounts never just randomly drop cool clips from a 20-year-old game for no reason. There is always some motive. A tease. User rainbow_geisha guessed, “Anniversary announcement tonight….🤔”.
User CoreyOCroft called it a “Random anniversary clip… hmmmmmm”. Exactly. That “hmmmmmm” says it all. It feels like a breadcrumb. User DudeKyleRaider put it aptly: “We see what you’re doing 👁️👁️”. The community is watching Crystal Dynamics. They see you.
Which is not completely agreed upon is what it is they want. Thus, the debate starts in the responses. User Nivosita asked for “Anniversary, Legend and Underworld remakes”. But then JohnDoe1432859 replied to them with some harsh skepticism: “Ah, yes. Remake a remake… shove the remakes where the sun don’t shine, 99% of remakes are trash. I-VI Remastered supreme.” Ouch. Some players thus far swear by “remaster” and are actively against the “remake” idea, which would be built up from the ground.
Then again, it’s all just confusing, with user gagamultiverse just saying, “I’m confused what this teasing is for.” And that is fair. It could be for anything. A new PlayStation Plus drop? User justbeingh0rny1 wondered, “So tra coming to ps plus?” User ChristianRauski speculated that it might just be the PS2 Classic version of Anniversary coming to modern Xbox consoles, which is basically an emulation, not a remaster. So hopes are all over the place.
Some of the funniest ones must be from Hoschimensch: “I wish he touched the new game that is in development so it goes finally gold.” For anyone not into game dev jargon, “going gold” means the game is finished and ready to be printed on discs. So that’s a whole different kind of Midas touch they’re asking for. They just want the next Tomb Raider game to be done already.
And, of course, we need the random meme replies to balance it out. User iasmina012 commented, “your midas touch on a chevy door,” which is a Taylor Swift lyric. Because why not? And brendanlovesu1 replied to another with “Midas would have loved this song” and a link to… presumably a song. The internet is a beautiful chaotic thing.
So what does it all mean? Is this a legit teaser for a Tomb Raider Remaster Collection? Well, it sure seems like the community thinks so and loudly is asking for it. Demand is beyond clear. Players are nostalgically looking back at those classic Lara adventures but want to experience them with a fresh coat of paint on their 4K TVs. The response to this single tweet shows just how much love is still there for the games that made Lara Croft an icon.
Whether this will lead to an official announcement or get everyone hyped for nothing, only time will tell. But one thing is for certain: the Tomb Raider fanbase is ready for this. They are watching, waiting, and ready to financially back some shiny, remastered action. Crystal Dynamics would probably want to listen to this feedback. The people have spoken. Or, well, tweeted. A lot.
