CD Projekt Red made truly big news for the Witcher 3: Wild Hunt 10th anniversary, and the buzz among the gamers is deafening. This fix that shall release later this year will introduce cross-platform modsupport for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. It will be the show’s first opportunity to put cross-platform modding on an easier and accessible path.
Big. Really big. You see, mods have always been exclusive to PC players, leaving console players merely to gaze from afar. But now? Fun can be spread among all! The Tweet promised that creating, sharing, and enjoying mods will be streamlined beyond anything they can imagine. The whole Internet exploded.
At some point, ππ―π»π²π΄πͺπ±83π jubilantly pronounced, “Wow! I can mod it on PS5!” However, that displeased Dominik RychliΕski, who added, “As usual, the old generation of consoles is being ignored.” Mm, that hurts.
The Switch crowd began to erupt in response. Some replies even implored, “Update for Switch 2.” CyberApollo flat-out asked, “Switch 2 patch?” while Cal Watts demanded, “We need a Switch 2 update!” So, clearly, Nintendo fans are feeling left out, especially since the Switch version is already, well, let’s just say it’s not the prettiest.
There were at least a few naysayers. HahaFunnyDoggo, a PC player, worried the update might break mods they’d already made: “Thanks for breaking all my mods so console players can get them.” Tyson McCallum raised an equally justified concern: “Will this break mod compatibility of current mods for PC?” Points to ponder. The last major update (4.04) did make some mods cease to function and forced modders to patch them.
When it comes to Cyberpunk 2077, _c0pyright_ begged, “Do it for Cyberpunk too I beg you π.” Well, that’s fair. If CDPR manages to do this for The Witcher 3, why not Cyberpunk?
Then, hopefuls for the Witcher 1 remake continue on their journey. Palaash Atri summed it up well: “Meanwhile me waiting for Witcher 1 remake.” Same, dude. Same.
So how exactly will mods work on consoles? Totoro2602 asks the real question: “How will mods work on consoles?” The million-dollar question. Bethesda has done it with Skyrim and Fallout, but CDPR’s offbeat way remains a mystery. The link to CDPR’s FAQ from the tweet might have some answers, but for now, we’re all just speculating.
One thing is for sure; this is a game changer. Cross-platform mod support means that console players can finally taste the wild, wacky, and sometimes downright broken world of Witcher 3 mods. Imagine Geralt getting a manicure with Thomas the Tank Engine mod on PS5. Glorious.
CDPR has yet to put a date on the release, but it did set the drop “later this year.” And with the hype train already full throttle, it won’t be long before the players get wind of the next steps. Meanwhile, probably some modders are scrambling to prep for the big event, and meanwhile, we’re just happy to roll our eyes at whatever crazy comes next.
