The Game Awards have revealed their nominees for the category of Best Adaptation and the response has been nothing short of tumultuous. To be honest, the official tweet from @thegameawards was really keen to know “What’s your pick for Best Adaptation?” and the responses are total madness, with some people having tantrums, others being confounded, and a plethora of people asking the same question about the omission: Where is Sonic the Hedgehog 3, people?
Here, let’s check out the nominations. The nominees are: The Last of Us Part II, Until Dawn, the Minecraft movie, the Devil May Cry anime, and the Splinter Cell series. Nevertheless, there was one adaptation that nearly everyone was expecting, the one that was highly credited and received decent reviews, which is Sonic 3, that has gone… unlisted. It is entirely absent. Gamers will definitely be remembering this for a long time.
The reply section looks like a combination of a support group for Sonic 3 and a riot at the same time. User @JavierAMendoza didn’t mince words and just declared “Sonic 3, the one you forgot.” Ouch! @LocalStarlyFan called it a “snub,” whereas @SpeedingInMania proclaimed that they are “Not voting in this category… Sonic 3 was wrongfully snubbed.” Quite a strong position. The main point is being spread from one user to another like @Shhmokeyyy1 who is mocking the situation with the words: “sonic 3 not here but minecraft and until dawn are??” It does sound a bit strange, doesn’t it?
It is not just a few users who are talking about it. The demand for Sonic 3 is enormous. @ThisGuyElvin even went as far as to directly ask “Sonic 3, Geoff. Where is it?” @gabrielw_jpg_opts was a bit more straightforward and just put it as “where the hell is Sonic 3?” Likewise, @FrokiOm even inquired in Spanish, “DONDE ESTA SONIC 3?” which, you know, means the same. The audience has made it very clear what they want: their blue blur.
But, it is not the end of the story, it gets even more bizarre. While everyone is grumbling about Sonic 3, the real nominees on the list also have a rough time getting love. Some of their receptions are not so great. User @gutz_yusuke just spilled it all out, bluntly stating, “These are all trash.” Pretty harsh, however, it could be justifiable. @Jaroy2Fantastic, to be accurate, proclaimed, “Sonic the hedgehog. None of these were good. Except for Splinter Cell because I haven’t seen it or know anything about it to comment on that one.” So, at least one adaptation does not fall prey to the critics due to the owner’s lack of knowledge.
The debate over the specific picks then begins, with the Devil May Cry anime being the most contentious. @gigarninja was very articulate in his criticism by stating, “it’s absolutely that putting DMC as the best adaptation is totally disrespectful. it was one of the worst of all time.” Nonetheless, @RangoTheMerc just joined the forum saying, “I hear DMC was ass.” The community does also stand split. Similar could be said about the DMC fandom, @slayhuman and @azuldimeter have simply offered “Devil may cry” and @tizicapi has quite confidently declared “DMC should win easily.” So, it is divisive, at least! Interestingly, @RangoTheMerc has also responded to the DMC criticism stating, “Meanwhile I remember people ripping into the old anime when it first came out.” So, it may just be a cycle.
Another pick is The Last of Us Part II. @yoketom42 thinks it will be an “Easy win for The last of us as always.” In contrast, @OnlyShyaa who appears to have an issue with a particular actor is announcing, “Get Pedro off my fucking game award list.” Such passion, folks! And our French-speaking friends also had their say as @gamer81_paul wrote about Until Dawn, calling it “vraiment la giga grosse blague de cette année en adaptation cinématographique… un navet,” which basically means he thinks it’s the biggest joke of the year in film adaptation and a total flop. However, he still believes TLOU Part 2 will be the winner.
