Earlier today Capcom revealed that Street Fighter 6 would be having a Monster Hunter Wilds conlighting event for the month of September. This should have been good news. After all, when two of the biggest Capcom franchises team up, it usually leads to an amazing and highly anticipated crossover. However, looking at the details reveals that fans are responding in a particular manner.
In summary, from September 1st to 30th, when you log into SF6, you’ll receive some special collaboration items as a reward for logging in. The shop will also feature EX colors for Blanka, Akima, Manon, Cammy, and Ken, which are advertised as “wild creature” colours from Monster Hunter. And that is the extent of the collaboration. That’s it. Collaboration for five characters and nothing more.
And the community is utterly — I mean incomprehensibly — enraged. The grief the community has expressed on the announcement tweet looks like a pure concoction of disappointment and frustration. Someone like @Mishimaryu1 said “These would have been character outfits in SFV…” with a crying emoji. And, apparently, they seem to have a valid point because Street Fighter 5 did get actual Monster Hunter costumes with armor sets. Color changes pale in comparison.
@4everbuffy explained it the best when she wrote: “only 5 colors. why not a monster hunter color for every character in the game? is just a color.” And, yeah, I see the point she’s making—It’s ridiculous enough that there’s going to be color swaps, and to do it for only five characters seems a bit odd.
The fact that the colors are limited is not the only issue; some of these colors are apparently paid DLC costumes for Cammy and Manon. So do you have to buy the costume and then buy the special color for it after that? That’s what @4everbuffy was saying in another comment. If so, that’s wow—seriously.
The SF5 Monster Hunter collab shines a light on how bad this one is. As @ZeroXj99 mentioned, “Rathalos, Tiring, and Zinogre armors were in SF5 and now we get nothing but colors here.” It’s difficult to see this collab as anything other than a downgrade.
Players really seem to be expressing their frustrations with the World Tour avatar features as well. @Ppoulis1 commented, “World tour and avatars were a mistake man…” and @okrawinfreyshow commented, “robbed by avatar again. typical.” There’s the perception that the create-a-character system is drawing away resources from the fighters, which people want, and it’s cooler stuff.
@fifthgrailwar explained the problem succinctly: “Writing a reply so you hopefully have more info to gage that we’re tired of the fucking create a character bullshit. Give your actual characters collab items again.” A lot of the replies express somewhat similar frustrations.
But the negativity is not universal. @Snickers_xO_ defended the collaboration, saying, “Everyone in the comments complaining meanwhile I’m just happy there’s an in between for us while we wait for late September update.” So unlike others, some are just grateful for the mention.
While there is that, negativity is the chief emotion concerning updates to SF6. While discussing the status of Season 3, @jet11snake referred to the update as “a disgrace.” He mentioned, “we have neither a fight pass, we have barely new costumes, we have no new game modes.” SF6 was scorned earlier in the year for the lack of post-launch content, and this negativity seems to persist.
@Archangel778 highlighted the most inexplicable aspect, stating, “You guys own both IPs. Surely you could do more than lame recolors.” Capcom trusts in the ownership of both Street Fighter and Monster Hunter as there are no licensing restrictions. They literally could do anything, and they chose… color swaps.
The criticism is also becoming a bit laughable. @Buddy_fgc said, “The colors are cool. Not sure about the fruity pebbles highlights 😔.” That’s a very peculiar complaint, but I kind of get it? Some of the color schemes are a little… breakfast cereal.
Then there’s @hatingmf12 who “Damn this shit is ass 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭“ which isn’t the most constructive feedback, but it conveys emotion.
What’s funny about all this is that the criticism is not limited to the Monster Hunter collaboration — it appears to stem from the ongoing issues with SF6’s content delivery. @V00__D00, in one of the replies, stated that they wanted “meaningful content that actually impacts most players across the whole cast (not only a handful of costumes or ed colors for certain characters).”
Also with French players @Lt_Bakkelo and @ZelmLMN commenting on the avatar armor being over-priced in the shop and that it would be too much, a bit of an international mix in the replies. Because, well, it will be.
Where was I? Oh, yes — collaboration. The collaboration is disappointing. It saddens me to say that instead of receiving Monster Hunter armor for the fighters, they are struggling to get color variants for five characters. What’s worse is that users are already making comparisons with how Street Fighter 5 treated the crossover.
The fact that Monster Hunter Wilds is one of Capcom’s flagship games is baffling. It’s like they want to put a minimal amount of effort into the collaboration instead of trying to generate hype for both games.
The timing, like the rest, is strange. I assume that this collaboration was meant to cover the gap, but with respect to the late September update, it is not working in most people’s favour. It does not work since for the gap.
Street Fighter 6 users crave and expect post-launch content; Street Fighter 6 users want new modes, new costumes, or collaborations. Without a doubt, the collaboration is a disappointment compared to its predecessor. That’s the collaboration from the other title in the series, which is still able to provide that.
Is there maybe more that we haven’t seen? Because this could be the entirety. Either way, people have voiced their negativity, and through their voices, some of their other concerns about SF6’s post-launch support is getting attention.
