Strap yourself in, die-hard Star Wars fans. Nintendo has dropped another nostalgia bomb muscle-men front of the May 4th date with Star Wars: Grand Collection, and that’s really right: May the Fourth. This is a hauler.
What’s the big deal? Grand Collection houses all nine of the legendary Star Wars titles, primed for blasting off into your Nintendo Switch. Whether you can empty entire sections in A New Hope straight from memory, or just feel like hurling enemies over cliffs, there’s probably something to be found in the collection for you. Honestly, what better way could there be to celebrate Star Wars Day than indulging in some classic gaming goodness?
So, the big question what is actually in this thing? From the fusion of already well-known historical titles, covering the whole spectrum from dark side to light, is quite amazing: Knights of the Old Republic (that RPG that, two decades hence, still holds up), Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast (because who doesn’t like a good, gritty lightsaber fight), and the most underrated, though long gone, Republic Commando (RIP Sev, we still miss you). Oh, and don’t forget the OG Battlefront II: the one before EA got its hands on it. Yes, that one.
The is an assortment, which also includes, deep cuts such as Star Wars: Episode I Racer (that pod races at 9000 mph-and is very old) and The Force Unleashed (where full-on, crazy-over-the-top power fantasies with Starkiller are chef’s kiss). So, if you’ve ever shouted, “I AM THE SENATE,” this is your jam.
The timing figures-merely perfect. Just ahead of the all-important May 4, it’s Nintendo being blatant with, “Go ahead, enjoy.” That’s just the way they hustle, and we respect that. It’s not just killing it with retro collections lately, either. Adding Star Wars into the mix? Genius. Pay-by-admission here, and you’ve portable KOTOR.
But, really, the question is should you pick it up? If you are a Star Wars fan with any interest in gaming whatsoever, yes. It is a no-brainer, really. So well do the games stand, surprisingly enough, alone, and that all on the Switch is just chef’s kiss again. Every day, too, that we are away from home and playing KOTOR is probably the closest we will ever be to a religious experience.
So what’s the verdict? It’s a love letter to fans, nostalgia revisit, and pure gaming in one package. And with May the 4th just right around the corner, there isn’t a better time to jump into it. May the Force be with you-and your wallet because it will be well worth it.
And if you need us, we’ll be here trying to take down Darth Malak for the 50th time. Some things never change.
