Square Enix has officially announced the release of ‘The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales,’ a new action RPG from the creators of Octopath Traveler and Bravely Default, late this year. The official Twitter account of the publisher tweeted the news and it was this that lit up the fans’ enthusiasm who were already acquainted with the popular HD-2D style of the studio. This proclamation not only guarantees the project’s progress but also promises one of the most awaited role-playing games of the year.

To put it differently, if you have been following the whole HD-2D saga of Square Enix, there is no way they would not be one of the most impressive studios in the industry right now. Octopath Traveler? A classic. Triangle Strategy? Definitely underrated. And now, they have opened up the way for a new game, The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales. The tweet simply states that it will be “later this year” which is the oldest and most generic phrase in the video game world when it comes to announcing dates. It tells us almost nothing but at the same time a lot!! Well, at least we can safely guess that it is indeed going to occur in 2026. That is a small consolation.

As always, the most exciting part of it all is in the replies section. Gamers have already started to examine every tiny detail and the discussion has taken a lot of turns. For starters, many are expressing their great chance reactions as they got to play a demo. Hold on, there was a demo? Supposedly so! ThunderStashYT a user announced that the demo was “one of the few that I genuinely didn’t want to end,” which is an outstanding compliment. Erek Ladd another user, called it “so much fun.” So, the first impressions are already very positive which is a good sign.

But, of course, there won’t be any gaming announcements without a bit of chaos and a lot of people asking for things at once. The demo appears to be a Switch 2 exclusive? ‘Astral’ who is under that name was actually screaming “NOOOOO WDYM DEMO ONLY ON SWITCH 2???? noooooooooooooooooNOOOOOOOOO” and I completely understand why. This rumor set off a whole sub-discussion about platforms. Some gamers, like Individual_11_, are asking Square to “Put the demo on Playstation.” And KrsJin was just curious if there is “Any chance at a demo for non-Nintendo platforms before release?” So the platform wars are already heating up and the game is not even out yet. Typical.

Also, the whole dilemma of physical vs. digital is an ongoing argument and it leads to a certain kind of internet fire. One user called States @ Monochrome Mobius wanted “Physical copy on cartridge!” which prompted a weird exchange about “keycards.” Is it that the PS5 version may employ those annoying game keycards instead of a proper disc? A few users, for instance, Zephiros and Héctor Montemayor, are already promising they will buy the PS5 version despite the keycards, or giving advice to others that “choose wisely.” Jeremy chimed in, saying “Switch 2 proper cart, no keycard,” escalating the debate to a console superiority discussion. It’s overwhelming.

Some of the comments were more focused on the game itself. One user, Grimmow, noticed a flaw in the demo, and said, “I hope you’ve changed the resurrection system that ruined the challenge… It was really stupid to reappear in exchange for a few coins…” That’s actually very useful criticism! It shows that the buyers are worried about the gameplay and not just the visuals. And then there is the inevitable but funny call for other games. Mikey 🍵 just casually dropped a “cool but where’s chrono trigger?! Come on square” in the midst of the chaos. Gamers, never change!

The bloodline can’t be ignored here. The words from some of the replies such as “I see Bravely Default, I purchase. Easy as that.” by MikeusesAether or “Good team working on it got high hopes for this game” from James Bilclough are mentioning the same thing. The developers behind Octopath and Bravely Default are living up to a very heavy trust burden. Some are calling it their “most awaited this year.” That’s a lot of pressure, but if the demo feedback is to be believed they just might live up to it.

So, what is the bottom line of this Twitter madness? It is a mixture of the pure kind of hype, and spot-on criticism coming from a demo which most people have not played and the usual platform war that is the signature of current gaming discussions. The developers’ solid reputation has made the excitement quite palpable and very real. It is clear that the gamers are very impatient for a new grand HD-2D adventure. Meanwhile, other major releases continue to generate buzz, with titles like Final Fantasy VII Remake hitting Xbox soon.
