Square Enix has graced us with yet another sneak peek of Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, comprising some character showcases and combat, among other things. To be honest, I thought it looked gorgeous. The link is expected to be an official site, but those replies-it is where the real value lies. Always.
The tweet itself is as simple as it could get-A sneak peek into Dragon Quest VII Reimagined? How about that? Now, the comments? Oh, they explode every way. It’s a sort of digital olagosi where everyone just screams something different.
The first thing talked about is that EnvyLFC wants Pokemon in the style of Akira Toriyama, which would be so cool: Toriyama style for Dragon Ball meets Pokemon? Somebody, please make this happen.
Celso Junior wants a Brazilian-Portuguese translation: “Tradução para Português do Brasil por favor.” We need to localize, folks! Not everybody speaks English, I’m shocked to know that.
Guada971 looks toward the future: “What should Square Enix reimagine NEXT?” FF6? Rudra no Hihou? Chrono Trigger reimagined? Chrono Trigger reimagined? Don’t play with my heart like that. That game is perfect already, okay? Well, maybe not: I would buy it immediately.
Things then begin descending into heavy confusions. Put in that spirit, VanTor asks, “I want to know why you have not resolved the issue with Kate?” Who is Kate? What issue? Could this be a Square Enix customer service matter? Was it about money? Did she have her Dragon Quest save file corrupted, and all of a sudden, she wants some kind of vengeance? Could someone clue me in here?
Super pass Octavian (fantastic name, btdubs) wants to know the details about “Which islands got cut?” In stark contrast to the others, this is a sober question regarding Dragon Quest VII boys because the original version had roughly a million islands. I mean, that game was HUGE. So absurdly bloated with length that I don’t think it could ever be fully reimagined; so, what do they leave out?
Ginja shows up saying, “Any chance this one won’t be translated by an evil person?” Uh… what? Did something happen with the previous translation? Is there such a thing as Dragon Quest translator evil? Internet doesn’t forget, it seems.
Let’s bring in some politics: Somebody is claiming Tifa’s image is getting used to represent the antifa terrorist group, questioning if Square Enix will okay it. Then the thread explodes into… politics? A Dragon Quest thread? Gamers, guys, we will turn anything around on a conversation about turn-based RPGs.
Another one is the Deutsche-speaking bunch down in a rage about “game key cards” for the Switch 2 releases. The word on the street is that Square Enix is pulling a wee bit of chicanery with its physical releases? The protestors want proper cartridges, not key cards. Respect physical media!
KeijiKG from his tongue-in-cheek comments wonders if he is strong enough in heart for “this part with voice acting,” and it’s such a sweet thought. Well, the power of Dragon Quest VII will indeed sting deep. Then again, the original just didn’t have voice acting, so kind of hearing these guys speak-for some-might turn out different.
The conversation somehow drifts along with deportation policies and MS-13. In a Dragon Quest thread? What is happening? Grok fact-checkes about Kilmar Ábrego García. How did we get from hugging slimes to that conversation?
Someone else asks for comparisons between Switch 1 and PS5 versions, since he needs to “decide now” on which to buy. Fair points, anyway, but the game’s not even out yet. Be patient, young grasshopper!
And a handful of people in the comments want other games to be reimagined-Illusion of Gaia? That’s a deep cut. Someone’s even talking about Dragon Quest 8 on 3DS and are tracking down a 3DS to mod. The passion speaks for itself.
That is the kind of magic gaming Twitter creates when all-thread turns wildly like a goose chase from an innocent “hey, check out this Dragon Quest preview” post.
Nevertheless, Dragon Quest VII Reimagined definitely has its moments. With that old Toriyama charm around it, updating the graphics while still keeping the classic turn-based combat is pretty damn sweet. That one was huge-We’re talking 100 hours plus if you did everything literally. The Job system? Chef’s kiss.
Are they going to have to cut some islands or something? And whether the translation will be done by “evil” people or not? Or is it going to be released on a game key card or a proper cartridge? Gamers are SCORED on everything, but also… they get distracted so fast by anything else taking place around them.
The previews showing new models are keeping that classic Toriyama style with some additional detail. The battles look gorgeous, smooth, slick, yet so traditional and classic. The colors are bright and cheerful, exactly as a Dragon Quest game ought to be-a perfect plating for this familiar comfort food.
And that among all things in the chaotic comments really matters. A good classic RPG is getting a new lease on life. Excuse me while I go study who Kate is and why everyone seems to be so mad about her unresolved issue!
