So, seemingly, PlayStation announced the linking of Discord accounts for use on Discord right? To allow one’s friends to see what game is being played, which is cool, I guess. But… is that all? The official AskPlayStation twitter account even tweeted out a guide explaining how to get everything connected, but people responded asking for all sorts of additional stuff that they’d really like to see from the integration.
For one, there are people wanting real Discord integration ON PlayStation 4 rather than that somewhat simple account-linking thing. A user nicknamed @NickGoodThLegen said just that – “Should just add compatibility with PlayStation 4s with discord,” and that makes total sense, because why would you just be showing what you’re playing when you could actually USE Discord on your console?
Going from there, the bugs are already shaping up with another user @_HighlyAdept_ saying that they keep getting disconnected from voice chats while on this feature. Which is a relief? New feature drops with bugs. @Sp3ctral_27, on the other hand, supported that claim with an anecdote about his account being linked, but something keeps un-linking it for no apparent reason. Juice.
But hold on, it really sells itself: people are asking for way more than just game activity showing. Some users are begging for screen-sharing through Discord on PlayStation- we need Screenshare 😮💨 Really really bad,” said @PadawanKakashii, while @_itskillah agreed with “Add screen sharing to discord and fix the issue where it rings the whole group chat when joining,” which sounds like an actual notification issue is on the horizon.
That leaves streamers stewing; @naut1carose_ pointed out that, however, “But can’t use/capture discord vc for streaming 🙄 Please talk to Discord about that,” which is as bad a miss as it could be for content creators wanting to get Discord voice chats in their streams. Come on, Sony- basic stuff for streamers!
And then there are the regional issues- @Valerii_Belyi, from Russia, asked, “How to do that from Russia? Can Sony contact the Discord management?” implying that it might not have been released everywhere yet. And @peoplesgonemad kicked it up several notches, musing about how Shadow of the Beast can’t be played on PS5 without a premium subscription, which, um…what does that have to do with Discord? But hey, that’s Twitter for you.
Some people are actually totally against the idea, though-@iampowlly warned, “Don’t do it, glogg’s everything up and well just don’t.” I don’t really know what “glogg’s” means, but whatever it is, it doesn’t sound good! Then @JHard83 went on a whole rant about Sony destroying gaming and raising prices and censorship and changing their logo to a rainbow, which… okay then.
Maybe the strangest response comes from @gmgxcix who just demanded. “FIX PS3 AVATARS!!!” along with some pictures, presumably of broken PS3 avatars. Like sure, but how does that relate to Discord integration? Twitter conversations always go off the rails.
Whatever else is clear is that gamers want WAY more from this Discord integration than Sony is willing to offer. Like @WaifusTrash said, “Tell the higher ups we want streaming to become a thing.” If you’re gonna integrate with Discord, actually integrate. Screen sharing, voice chat, stable connections: that is literally what people want.
It’s cool that you can show your Discord friends what PlayStation game you’re playing, but what-have-other-platforms-done-already? Pretty much forever, Xbox has had more robust Discord integration than this.
The guide they linked is just how to connect your accounts-that part is the easiest with going to Discord connections, add PlayStation Network, sign in, and bam you’re done. But when the feature keeps disconnecting people and doesn’t include the stuff gamers actually want…is it even worth doing?
Maybe this is just phase one and they’ll add more features later. But right now it feels like Sony’s just checking a box saying “we have Discord integration” without actually making it useful. Players want to actually use Discord on their PlayStation, not just show their game status.
And with all the connection issues people are reporting, it might be better to wait until they iron out the bugs before even bothering to link your accounts. Because nothing’s more annoying than setting something up just to have it break constantly.
So which means – PlayStation got integration with Discord. But it is in the crudest form possible, with gamers already asking for features that would make it worthwhile; let’s hope Sony listens and will actually improve it rather than leaving it as some half-baked status sharing.
