At the center of this hype train, Sonic was said to be coming to Fortnite. Or, rather, his wheels are. And not just any wheels as we are talking about the riding Sonic animated wheels and Spin Dash wheels – kind of crazy when you think about it.
It all started as a new leak by ShiinaBR dropped on Twitter, showing a very simple clip of these brand new vehicle cosmetics. Gamers went nuts instantly. As soon as the clip ended, the comments began pouring in, half with excitement and the other half in confusion on how to even obtain these items.
Here’s the story- The first batch of Sonic wheels is locked behind the Rocket League pass. You read that correctly. You gotta play Rocket League to get Fortnite cosmetics. Which is a… choice. A weird one, for sure, but it is a choice. There was a back and forth on replies over whether you require the premium pass or if it is for free (leaning towards premium, sorry free players) and, obviously, you’ve only got until December 10th to do your grinding in RL, or then it’s over.
Well, hold up, there’s more- Spin Dash wheels might be on the shop separately, according to some wise souls in the comments. Which would make sense because, I mean, Epic is going to want to squeeze every single dime out of the collaboration.
Just to add, user Kaz says there’s a Sonic-centric Rocket League event in about two weeks. So maybe we’re getting the wheels now and the actual Sonic skins a bit later? Actually, that would be, like, a standard way these crossovers usually go. The files are currently encrypted, according to several commenters, so Epic in all likelihood is hiding something big.
What cracked me up was the Fortnite player’s reactions to how they now have to play another game to get Fortnite items. The Baron of Z-Land saying, “They forced him to play Rocket League,” with a crying emoji is so mood, and Dori’s response with the “Fortnite players when they gotta play a game that’s not Fortnite” meme? Spot on. Absolutely spot on.
Well, underneath the meme culture, it also means big – and big is the continuing fusion of the Epic Games ecosystem. Rocket League and Fortnite, they’ve all gotten linked up through our accounts and cosmetics now. It’s smart business honestly, even if that forces us to play games we might never have touched.
The wheels really look crazy good, animated with that classic Sonic blue and all. Let’s just say, once people start unlocking these, you’ll see them all over the place. The Spin Dash variant is gonna be even crazier-looking once we catch a glimpse of it.
There were those players who were disappointed by the update because it didn’t bring any other collaborations they were hoping for. Celeste Heron appeared to express being “extremely disappointed” about no Megazord release and missing encrypted sets that could’ve revealed something bigger, but hopefully, companions are coming soon, and an event goes live on the 27th, allegedly.
Very soon the real question will be asked- when do we get Sonic skins? The wheels are alright and all, but we want to actually play Sonic. Probably in a matter of time, if history has anything to say about it. Maybe around that Rocket League event in a couple of weeks or with the next big update for Fortnite.
One thing is for sure: Epic sure knows how to keep us guessing. They drop little bombs that set this community into overdrive for speculations, and it works every single time. This alone was proven by the number of engagements that appeared on the original tweet.
So if these Sonic wheels are what you desire, then you’d best be firing up Rocket League and start grinding that pass. Somewhere near Tier 40, according to SelkraOfficial, although it’s a little bit all over the place in the replies. Keep an eye out for those Spin Dash wheels as they might hit the shop soon.
Honestly, this collab has been overdue for a very long time. Sonic felt like he needed to be on Fortnite forever by the sheer amount of other big-name gaming icons having made the leap. Perhaps it is better late than never, and starting with vehicle cosmetics is quite a clever means to bring in the franchise.
Who knows what comes next – Tails glider? Knuckles harvesting tool? Eggman back bling? Once they open this particular floodgate, possibilities become endless. For now though, we’ll take our animated wheels and be happy about it. Even if we have to play Rocket League to get them.
The integration of Epic’s games keeps deepening, and while it is maybe a little annoying to jump between titles, it is creating this awesome shared cosmetic universe that’s kinda unique in gaming. Love it or hate it, you gotta give it props for innovation.
Yeah, Sonic in Fortnite is a legit thing. Slowly but surely. Starting today with wheels, who knows what tomorrow will see. Keep those eyes peeled for more encrypted files getting revealed, because you know there is so much more coming from here.
As for other platforms, this kind of crossover event is something that could easily excite fans on both PlayStation and Xbox alike.
