If you’ve ever played any of the Prince of Persia games, you know just how great the world of Ancient India is as a setting. It has so much personality and culture.  It’s been quite a long time since we’ve had a new Prince of Persia game, but it appears something like it could take its place. That game is none other than Ragi: An Ancient Epic

We first got glimpses of this action adventure game back in 2017, when a Kickstarter campaign started to get it published. Although the campaign would eventually fail, the creators didn’t give up. It is in fact currently in development, and luckily, we got some gameplay footage of what Ragi: An Ancient Epic will offer.

First, let’s set the story. A young gypsy girl is chosen by the gods to defeat demonic forces that are plaguing the world. It is her fate to save her brother and defeat the big bad, Mahabalasura. This demon lord is quite powerful, so you’ll be forced to use tactics and resources to come out on top.

The gameplay footage that was shown starts off with the gypsy girl having lost her brother, taken by demonic forces. We see her running through various levels, which look massive and beautifully rendered. The scale of these levels is breathtaking. You truly do feel like you’re in Ancient India, where each structure has a unique story of its own.

We see the gypsy girl take on enemies with melee combat and some sort of magic system. It plays a lot like the early God of War games, which is a good sign if you like these types of beat’em up titles.

There also seems to be a lot of platforming going on, a game design that switches up the pace from the combat. One of the main weapons shown is a magical staff. The gypsy girl wields it with exceptional precision, and it looks like it’s going to be one of your main weapons.

One can only assume you’ll be able to upgrade your weapons as the game progresses. This progression system has always worked well for beat’em ups, as it forces you to continue playing to have an easier time with combat.

It appears there will be various sub-classes of demons you can face. It’s exciting to think about what types of bosses you’ll encounter in Ragi: An Ancient Epic. Hopefully, they pose a challenge and give this game some added difficulty. It’s always so satisfying to defeat difficult bosses, who seem to have your every move accounted for.

This action adventure game being developed by Nodding Heads Games is tentatively scheduled to release in 2020. It will be available for all major consoles and PC.
