Sixteen years-long rift. It was from the Monster Hunter Tri where these two beasts took the finest opportunity to have their war, and now the legendary rivalry could once more be seen in Monster Hunter: Wilds. Monster Hunter’s official twitter release of a hype trailer showed the two beasts in a state of video frenzy.
And what a nostalgic tweet: “It’s been nearly 16 years since they first clashed when Monster Hunter Tri launched in Japan, but for Rathalos and Lagiacrus, the flames of rivalry burn brightly in #MHWilds!” Honestly, the response, a blend of hype and nostalgia, is downright maddening.
The love for Lagiacrus comes from the heart. One gamer @Rb_Someone said, “Tears each time man. You guys did lagi amazingly.” And he’s right- their status of being fan favorites still goes, more so for the older generation that remembers underwater combat in Monster Hunter Tri. Plus, there’s a ton of potential for underwater combat in the game. Then @senseisunrie calls them “pure cancer,” to which @Oasismoose responds with “The underwater fighting was actually fun!” Such is Monster Hunter’s discourse: nobody ever aligns on an opinion.
That said, let’s talk about the whole Rathalos rivalry debate. @EmperorZ016 wondered, “How many rivals does Rathalos have at this point lol,” contemplating Lagiacrus, Seregios, and Astalos as his top contenders. @JohnDoe1388 injected some lore: “Lagiacrus and Seregios are the official rivals, Sky Vs Sea and the fight for aerial supremacy. Astalos is the crackhead that tried to steal his girl, and then Anjanath is the one-sided rivalry because Rathalos beats his ass every time.” Yep… oddly specific, but, honestly? That really works.
That was the affirmation of wisdom; meanwhile, certain individuals weren’t quite feeling it. Others turned back to the performance issues. @updulrhman lamented: “I can’t run past the character selection without a crash. Fix the game on PC!” while @ItsGojiraa pleaded, “Any chance we can get some optimisation please?” To which @VonVincentHohen returned in a doomster tone: “You complain about the threats but do nothing about them… You ignore Day One problems with absolute indifference… and I hope the community wakes up and stays away for a while.” Yikes.
Let’s not end on a downer though. The hype now is real, especially with the community asking for more classic monsters. @eoTacola begged out, “Frontier Monsters in Wilds, Please.🙏❤️” and while @pgumhcconpcac (literally “PLEASE GIVE US MH CLASSIC COLLECTION ON PC/CONSOLE”) echoed this sentiment, @TheHumbleClover suggested something completely brilliant: “Yall really did pull one out of the hat, this game is simply amazing. Now let’s toss in a cowboy armor set and make it a legend.”
So yeah, 16 years later, the feud between Rathalos and Lagiacrus is back, and Monster Hunter fans have really been here for it, from screaming underwater combat to demanding fixes or just vibing with nostalgia. It sure looks like Wilds is something special, and this trailer proves that the flame of this rivalry is burning hotter even to this day.
