Let the speculation begin, PlayStation fans, as the game console rumor mill is spinning wild again, and this time it involves the PS6. According to fresh leaks from insider KeplerL2, Sony’s next-gen console is supposedly going to be quite a powerhouse console. Rather, they could be doing a double whammy: one standard PlayStation 6 and a portable version.
Yes, portable PS6. Now let’s calm down the Squeal for “Vita 2.0” excitement and do some breaking down first.
The first is time. According to this leak, the PS6 should be released at the earliest in late 2027 or 2028. That is still a long time. So don’t even think about selling your PS5. As for the portable one? Apparently, it will be released after the [big] console, and here’s the real kicker: it supposedly will be less powerful than the PS5. Huh? Yep again.
If that turns out to be true, this would not be directly competing with that heavy-duty version. Rather, it will be an accessory, most probably similar to a Switch Lite but with a sticker bearing something other than Nintendo’s name.
Naturally, before you begin giving Sony the evils for lowering power, reason for that is: portability entails disadvantages. The Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch taught us this sort of thing. What a potential portable PS6 will do is aim for battery life, low-cost, and for heaven’s sake, avoiding yet another massive flop like the Vita for Sony. But, will gamers accept it?
The leak doesn’t elaborate on specs (boo), but if the portable PS6 is indeed less powerful than a PS5, then this will presumably lead to 1080p or even 720p gaming while on the go.
Maybe cloud streaming will have a part to play? Considering what Sony is doing with PlayStation Remote Play, that wouldn’t be entirely out of the question.
And Microsoft should be the next in sight. So, if Sony does indeed go for the dual console scenario, then what follows is an Xbox Series X portable? The game race goes on and on.
The leak should be taken with a pinch of salt. Well, KeplerL2 has quite an impeccable track record, but plans do alter-in four years’ time.
Anyway, the thought of a portable PS6 is juicy. So, will this constitute Sony’s redeeming arc in the handheld arena? Or will it go crashing and burning like the Vita? Well, only time will tell.
One thing’s for sure, the console wars are about to get spicy .
