The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is an RPG by Owlcat Games that has huge potential and has already drawn a lot of questions and discussions among gamers. Players get ready for a fantastic journey, as the aforementioned studio has shared a huge amount of information about the game, which looks like they are playing for the highest stakes. Players online have always had some…thoughts however.

What happened? The studio was once recognized for creating Pathfinder and Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader and it was given the task of drawing The Expanse universe, which is one of the best hard sci-fi worlds, with its share of details that they are borrowing the same storyline technology from their past games, which includes that crazy system that monitors every single decision you have made. Your choices will matter, and the ‘tube system’ dialogue editor is making a comeback, only now it is running in Unreal Engine 5. Indeed, they are leveraging all the advancements of Nanite and Lumen to create stunning visuals that are expected to be a great leap over anything Owlcat has done in the past.

Their workforce is expanded by a factor of three to four. This is nuts! And the company is saying that the primary reason for this astronomical change is being able to capture the zero-G combat and gameplay correctly. If there is anyone who can make space warfare both fun and tactical, then it is certainly that the game developers have got the most qualified persons. They are trading in a rigid class system for a more free one where your character develops along with you as you play. And what is more, the companions will be more Mass Effect-like. You will be able to issue them commands during fights as opposed to managing each one of their moves. This seems to be a very nice change from the party management that was sometimes quite taxing in their previous titles.

The story line is also quite different. The first few hours of the game are linear, but after that, it opens up ‘more than players might expect.’ You can then move around the solar system, choose where you want to go, and carry out main and side quests in any way you like. It’s like a ‘choose your own adventure’ tour in space, and I adore it.

But, hang on, what was I talking about? Oh, yes, the reaction. Most of the time it’s a mixed bag. The reaction from many players is a positive one. User ‘400Kbps’ shared that they first came across The Expanse in the series and it very quickly became their favorite sci-fi, thus calling the game a possibility. ‘Dutch_Amir’ is eagerly waiting for it, stating that he is a fan of both the novels and the TV show. ‘MightyN0ob’ has been following the project forever and is hoping to get an absolutely stunning game out of it in the end. The buzz is real, and some users like ‘SchuyMyles’ are even pre-planning 200 hours for the game. ‘PredsFanBrett33’ was the first to express his delight about everything that has been shared, written, and shown so far.

Then… the other side of the airlock. The most immediate and loud talk is not even about the gameplay. It is about the studio’s whereabouts. Comments from ‘Rumotu’ and ‘SublustrisAvis’ say that they don’t support Russian game developers anymore or that the studio is “still made by russians.” These are the political views which were previously discussed in relation to games and they will extensively separate some gamers from the beginning.

Still, some are doubtful and express technical concerns. ‘JoeOfTheSith’ prayed, “Please don’t let this be overhype smoke and mirrors.” It is a valid concern considering the industry’s history. ‘JimmerVision’ commended the specifics but criticized the choice of Nanite and Lumen for Unreal Engine 5, assuming that the game will “run like shit” just as other UE5 titles do. ‘dyk3h0und’ was also participating in that discussion and he pointed to the upper management who insisted on using shiny new technology even when it might not be appropriate.

Then there is also confusion. ‘Illage2’ and ‘JumbleStil63602’ are among many people who are asking just one thing: “Release date?” The question is as old as the hills. A few players even confused it with the Telltale Expanse game, which has been released, causing a sub-thread for clarifications. ‘MimosaPukika’ was inquiring whether there are any kinds of space magic besides the protomolecule, indicating that not everybody is up to date with the lore. ‘Nastyriff’ had basically the same relatable approach when he said that he feels like he should be more excited but maybe he just has Starfield and Outer Worlds fatigue. This RPG is generating buzz across platforms like PlayStation and Xbox.
