The announcement for the Overwatch 2 Anniversary event from Blizzard had a bit of a wow factor. The official tweet promised the return of GOATS mode, tons of googly eyes in Totally Normalwatch and OW Classic: GOATS, a Legendary Loot Box, a new Weapon Charm, and “more rewards.” It does sound like a charming party, doesn’t it? The player assembly, however, seems to be laying low on enthusiasm.
They remembered, and they celebrated. The Overwatch 2 Anniversary event is underway, with returning game modes and cosmetic rewards from limited-time activities. But alas, the mood of discourse among the community has become overwhelmingly negative, with players lamenting recycled content and no real new additions in celebration of the game’s second anniversary.
Then the explosion in frustration started flowing in the reply section. @Onigurli took the displeasure to the next level: “Ya’ll stood there on stage, promising so much for OW2… including new, exciting events and rewards. Yet we only keep getting reheated content and recolored skins. Rewards get worse and worse too.” Those really struck the anniversary that they themselves had no hope for.
But those weren’t alone in their bitterness. @JackVitae set the bar even more sour: “Hey this anniversary event sucks so bad, do you even care? 😔 The emoji pretty much sells it. Meanwhile, @shini_cheese went on with the classic, “Nobody cares of this old and tired shit.” Brutal yet genuine.
Funny enough, here are some of the things players want and get. Many are having fits over a simple return of certain features. @danielmasonnow wants the “post-game chat time and voting cards” back, @unevenoverall asks for “mischief and magic” to come home, and @czjcfcsx is urgently demanding “owl skins back pls.” A pattern? Each one attempts to resurrect some feature that got killed off in OW2.
Some mixed reactions are going on with the GOATS mode itself. And in case for some reason you’d forgotten, GOATS was a triple-tank-triple-support meta that ran wild for the longest time through pro play. Some really loved it, some really hated it. Nobody, however, ever forgot it. @MaryConleche is probably definitely in that “hate” camp: “Can you guys NEVER again make me play 20 matches of classic? Like, genuinely why???” Twenty matches sounds like torture.
And then there are the rewards. People are beginning to realize that these rewards are perhaps a little… limp? @MegaTenShugs said he wants to “buy the goats recolor. Separately,” which sort of indicates maybe what’s offered ain’t what he really wants. On the other hand, @Sheepthann speaks of “rerunning Brig’s OG Goat or letting us buy Solaris outside of Bundle.” Bundle. Bundle. Bundle. It’s as if the developers can’t quite figure out their own pricing strategy.
PlayStation and Xbox players have also been vocal about similar issues in other games.
