Prepare for the onslaught because Nintendo shot a nostalgia missile straight into our faces. All of a sudden, they Apple-tweeted, “Do a barrel roll!”, and it attached some link that would probably go wild with Star Fox fans. Zero context and zero warnings- Just vibes. And if you are a millennial who grew up with an N64 controller, this shows how real this is.
For the uninitiated, “Do a barrel roll!” was one of gaming’s most popular lines, a request from Peppy Hare in Star Fox 64. Not just a suggestion but a command found in our consciousness. And now there is a tease from Nintendo- Perhaps… something for Star Fox for Switch Online? Remaster? A meme revitalization? Who knows, but the internet is going crazy.
The tweet contains a media attachment, but since we can’t see it (thanks, Elon), it is open to conjecture. Maybe a clip, maybe a teaser, maybe a summoning of Fox McCloud’s face into our soul. Whatever it is, Nintendo is being coy and it is working.
Strange part: there are NO replies. NONE. Either Twitter’s algorithm buried the hype, or people are too busy screaming into their pillows to type. Normally, this would have fandom saying something like “TAKE MY MONEY” or “WHERE’S F-ZERO THO,” but not this time. The silence is kind of eerie.
So what do you do? Obviously keep refreshing that Nintendo Direct page like a madman. If Star Fox is to revived up, it has to be soon. And if not…. Well, at least we got one hell of a meme throwback.
NOTE: If this is one of those Switch Online drops, let’s cross our fingers that it isn’t tied to that stupid Expansion Pack nonsense. Paying for N64 games is definitely a Koopa Troopa punch in the gut.
Except that, let’s keep our fingers crossed for something soon. Until then, practice those barrel rolls-organized just in case.
