For gamers, Konami has dropped the ultimate bomb. In just five days, METAL GEAR SOLID Δ: SNAKE EATER will be launched world-wide. Yeah, it really is happening. The long-awaited remake of the classic jungle infiltration sim is near its release, and the official Metal Gear Twitter account made sure none missed out on it by hyping it with a tweet that included snake and parrot emojis, because, well, why not?
But wait, it’s not all glory and memes in the reply section. While a ton of players are absolutely buzzing–as in Karim Jovian who just spammed hearts of green and another one named ShelteredStasis simply said, “Seriously, I can not wait for this!”–there’s the biggest elephant in the room. Or, you know, a big snake.
Performance issues! Yes, that old chestnut. So, one user, Northlander74, threatened canceling preorders and outright asked the devs if the rumors concerning games running at 60fps on PS5 are true. There was a little controversy created. Other users commented: “The review codes have bad performance. Maybe they’ll fix it at launch, maybe not,” while another pointed to a Digital Foundry video that supposedly has already explained the issues. Oof.
Now on to the file size! Foxy Bunnie2 stated that the preload is a whopping 95GB, comparing it with “more than ff16.” So, clean some SSD space for that. You’re gonna need it.
Look, let’s not set ourselves adrift on all the possible pitfalls. This is Metal Gear we’re talking about. The hype is real. One user Hanzo182_ is spending the next five days “in the jungle, just looking for The End, lmao.” That feeling from all over also includes” Hyped to play!” from one composer to “So damn excited” from another fan. There is even a Polish Subtitles plea from a die-hard fan based in Poland, which shows how far across the world this series has reached.
Talk about throwing shade at the original game. Pablo5425 called that boss battle “one of the best in history,” which you will probably agree with if you’ve played Snake Eater before. The memes have already started flooding the replies, which is always a good omen for an engaged community.
What, then, has become of this game? To the uninitiated, this is a ground-up remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, widely considered to be the apex of the series. It’s Big Boss’ origin story, set back in the 1960s during the Cold War. Jungle… survival… eat some snakes. It’s something. And now it’s going to get an urban makeover with what looks to be some jaw-dropping visuals.
The urban makeover brings in the urban problems, apparently. The big question on everybody’s mind is: Is this day-one patch going to carry the weight of the performance mess, or are players in for a rough ride? Time will tell. Meanwhile, Konami has a few days left to “spend these last days fixing the optimisation,” according to one user.
Despite all the rumbles, the overall vibe was against the grain of anticipation. It has been a long time since there has been a proper big-budget Metal Gear game, especially after the whole Kojima departure saga. This feels like an enormous opportunity for the series to take yet another bigger step forward. Players are ready to return to the jungle and relive one of the best gaming stories with a fresh coat of paint. Hopefully, the tech issues won’t get in the way of that.
Mark down, set an alarm, anything, because it’s happening. Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is going to be big. Whether or not you’ll be diving in on day one or just working out who to trust through the performance reviews: this is a huge moment for the gaming industry. Just maybe hold on to that preorder receipt—just in case!
