Marvel Rivals just made a fantastic announcement concerning the fourth season and the players can’t calm down with the introduction of “furry Wolverine” character. No one really anticipated this metamorphosis particularly since new content for the game had already been confirmed. The release tweet shows a strong Wolverine titled “Huodou, Immortal Beast of the Under City” whose fangs are dripping with lava and whose wrath is consuming his scarred body. It’s almost as if Wolverine is being turned into a legendary animal and might I say it looks pretty awesome.
The character skin will be accessible to players from November 6th starting at 6 PM PT, and as per the description it is a part of selecting a new Immortal Weapon where a hunter has formed a bond with another warrior “worn by timeless battles and losses” – which undoubtedly refers to the entire saga of Wolverine. The fella has certainly had a tough time.
Nevertheless, the player reactions in the comments section are extremely diverse. One player @_SnoopBlu wrote “Mannn I don’t even use lord characters but now you are giving lords these fire fits lmaooo I might have to bring them out of the closet” and this is like, absolutely fitting honestly. When a character’s skin is so attractive, other characters that are not frequently used suddenly become interesting to play.
Then there’s @DividendDad1 who wrongly believed it was a new character saying “To send me thinking we had a whole new character already” – and honestly same?? The design is so different from the traditional Wolverine that it could easily be mistaken for a new superhero. But nah, just a wild cosmetic that completely changes our favorite mutant with adamantium claws.
On the other hand, there are a few who are not that thrilled about it. @i18DDG rather directly said “Furry Wolverine don’t nobody care give Mantis more skins” which, good point?? Some characters are definitely missing out in the whole skins issue. @Bryce8181 was lamenting the fact that Adam Warlock has been getting no attention since Season 2.5 while @Stucdaddy simply asked “Will the game still be boring?” – ouch.
No doubt the whole furry debate is grabbing the most headlines. @ReplyGuy4Life posted “They got furry Wolverine out here giving us a heads-up on the overall tone of the season” while @JudgeOfGod88 referred to it as “Akuma Wolverine” which…actually it does have that Street Fighter boss vibe now that they mention it.
What is really interesting is how the players’ lore concerning the Immortal Beast concept goes so deep. Some players were even having a discussion in the replies as to whether this would be a way for others to also become “immortal” by receiving new skins, @awesomealien321 remarked “Story-wise it’s Iron Fist’s season” and @ValkyrEcho pondering on other original girls. The narrative emphasis in what is primarily a competitive shooter is actually pretty cool?? It’s like they are building this whole mythos around the skins.
And then there is, of course, the ongoing price issue drama. @gangstamayaa and @jstordinaryguy1 were going back and forth about how you can’t buy emotes separate from skins, with one whining “they testing to see what they can get away with yall keep buying these trash ahh skins 😭” – which, fair warning, valid concern. Microtransactions in video games today can be incredible.
Some international players faced their own hurdles, @arvsejff narrated they got their accounts banned because of the power cuts in South Africa which… wow that is such a bummer. @NoVoyPonerNada was requesting a Switch 2 version in Spanish that indicates just how worldwide the Marvel Rivals players’ community is.
Regardless of the mixed reactions, it seems that the majority of the players are on the side of excitement. @YoshiMaru2500 very straightforwardly said “Oh I’m buying this 👀” while @Blinky_TheGhost expressed the wish that every character from the tournament gets a skin. The creativity behind it is actually really brilliant when you think about it – taking Wolverine’s beastly instinct and directly transforming him into a mythical beast?? That is some top-notch character interpretation.
Marvel Rivals has proved once again that characters’ looks are no barrier to them being lured into the dressing room, even if it means making them unrecognizable. The discussions may revolve around whether one likes furry Wolverine or thinks it’s just too much, but one thing is certain, it is getting people talking. And in the case of live service games, player engagement is everything. The skin will debut alongside the opening of Season 4, and it won’t be long before we know if this has set the course for what is coming next. Are we then going to see other heroes as mythical beasts too?? Hulk as some mountain spirit
PlayStation and Xbox gamers will appreciate this level of creative character design.
