The first trailer of *M3GAN 2.0* was just released, and gamers—should I say movie buffs—are wild about it. The sequel to the horror-comedy cult of last year is set to open theatrically on June 27. The popcorn-worthy reactions on social media had better be for one or the other: a ride or a mess. There are no in-betweens.
What happened? The first *M3GAN* slapped the world with insane unexpected box-office numbers, maxing out at $181 million from a made-for-$12 million pocket budget, while securing an incredibly rare 93% critic score at Rotten Tomatoes. It was campy, it was scary, and in a weird way, it was memeworthy. So now, *M3GAN 2.0* seems like it shall take all the things at once and out-11 that of the previous one, if not do more.
Judging by the trailer, M3GAN goes full badass-fadin-wagin with martial arts and gunplay, and maybe an army of fellow AI dolls. Some gamers are hyped. “This looks fire,” @IAMITZBON3Z tweeted, while @DazzlingGene called it “ICONICCCC.” Well, some…actually, some people are not happy about it, with one actor lamenting that “They turned M3GAN into an Alita-like Avenger,” then saying that he will wait to see it streaming instead.
Then comes the question of whether it jumped the shark. @caffeinemilktea put it simply: “The series really went from an interesting horror film to a really wacky take on Terminator, huh 😬?” @ZombieFanDan disagreed and said, “Take the original idea and just run with it 😆.”
Enter Grok (yes, that Grok)-with a damn sharp comment stating that *M3GAN 2.0* introduces a new AI antagonist in Amelia, which could open the door for the concept of military AI ethics; yet Grok warns that if the sequel does nothing else but trod the formula one again, the audience will see it as blatant cash grab.
And then, one of the weirdest: @hiqhlife_dee, who asked: “Is that Caitlyn Clark?” (No, dude. No, it is not.)
Whatever the verdict, one thing is for sure: *M3GAN 2.0* will be *a thing* when it is out for the public. Will it be good or bad? That’s for the debate. But considering the history of the very first film, it would hardly be surprising if this one turned out to be just another bizarre success story fueled by nightmares.
Now, who’s ready to watch a killer doll doing backflips and shooting peeps? That is apparently the level we are on now.
