So, PlayStation has made a very exciting announcement that will turn the gaming world upside down. Naturally, Aloy will be getting the Classic treatment but the fun part is that you can get it free of charge right now if you are a PlayStation Plus member. LEGO Horizon Adventures, the December PlayStation Plus Monthly Game, is going to be a delight for the subscribers getting added to the library and keeping it as long as their subscription is active. The news was shared along with the picture of a LEGO Aloy, which indeed was quite adorable, coming directly from the official PlayStation account.
What is it that the game has experienced this time? The game initially was a family-friendly, co-op adventure that creatively presented the world of Horizon Zero Dawn but in LEGOs. It was not merely a retelling but a more playful and humorous take on Aloy’s journey. The game was launched last year and received positive feedback from critics, with many calling it a charming and fun spin-off. It is available on PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch but the PS Plus offer is only for the PlayStation version of it.
The community response online has been very mixed which is the case for almost any game announcement today. On one hand, there are people who are crazy about it. One particular user named Review Game Drops labelled it as “fantastic news” and expressed that they are really enjoying the art style. Another user, Noize, very succinctly said “This game is fun ngl”, which is quite a compliment in the current internet slang. A few more users echoed the same sentiment with Gro3_ stating it is “one of those titles that sneak up on you and become surprisingly good.” Sam Strajack commented: “This game is actually quite good”, which is as good a recommendation as you can get.
On the other hand, some negative feedback was given. Not everyone was thrilled at the announcement. One user, Brock, commented, “Literally nobody wanted this lil bro,” which is… a bit severe. Chris Frost, another user, revealed he feels some buyer’s remorse and wishes he could reverse the purchase saying “Wish I would have waited instead of buying this game.” He pointed out that this one wasn’t the usual LEGO game company, Traveller’s Tales, that developed it and he felt that was “glaringly obvious.” There was also some back and forth about the perspective of the game. Absolute_Velocity liked the game but imagined “it wasn’t top down ish in an angle way,” he wanted a more centered and overt the shoulder view like in the original Horizon series.
And always with these PlayStation tweets, the replies turned into other people’s requests and complaints. One wanted Uncharted on Android, another one had a problem with adding Neon White to their PS Plus library, and of course, the usual calls for local prices in Latin America. Classic Twitter chaos.
But what is the consensus? For a free game with your subscription, it appears to be a really sweet deal. A short and entertaining adventure—one player, March420, said he got platinum in about 13 hours, in a single day. It conveniently sits between the big and serious games as a little palette cleanser. It does not aspire to be Horizon Forbidden West; it is a silly, cooperative LEGO adventure and it has been successful in being so according to the majority of comments.
Is it a system-seller? Definitely no way. However, a freebie for December? It is a nice little present for the festive season. It is the kind of game that can be enjoyed with a little brother or a pal who is not into hardcore gaming; you can just have some laughs and not worry about it. The combination of the charm of the LEGO formula and the Horizon setting is kind of a nice idea even if the execution is not from the usual LEGO professionals.
So, if you are a PS Plus subscriber, why not click on that ‘Add to Library’ button? The worst that can happen is that you never bother with it. The best case scenario is that you encounter a surprisingly fun little adventure that does not take itself too seriously. In the world of games with 100-hour epic moments, at times, a relaxed and easy-going game is all that you require to break the ice. Now, if you will excuse me, I need to check if it is possible to build a LEGO Tallneck. Probably yes. That’s just fantastic.
