So as if life weren’t difficult enough lately, we just had the LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight info dump one can only dream of. And yes, this may very well be the biggest LEGO video game ever committed to disk. No joke. They released a gameplay video that gave us an ample 30 minutes of mesmerising Batman awesomeness, resulting in pure chaos.

For the filmmakers, this opening date seems forever away but should in theory give them enough time to really make something. It will be all for PS5, Xbox, Switch 2, and PC, the glam ensuring an even greater appeal. Just imagine a LEGO Gotham City with a full open-world model. Not just like a handful of blocks or a street. This is the big ‘G.’ There lies Arkham Asylum, Ace Chemicals, Wayne Tower… all of it. And you just go cause crimes, solve some puzzles, and look for random collectables… This will forever be addictive.

What are bigger-scale talks are with how combat works. This is not your garden-variety smash-first-style LEGO game. This is really Arkham-style-with combos, counters, cinematic takedowns, stealth attacks, detective vision, and explosive gel, basically.

Basically, it’s like having the best bits of the Arkham games kind of blockified. And fun. One player proceeded to add, “This looks more Batman then Gotham knights,” Utterly one word of opinion, basically a dig at that sentence is really true when you see all of it.

The story sets out with a young Bruce Wayne training with the League of Shadows before he came out as Batman. Then, seven characters that can be played during the campaign- Batman, Jim Gordon, Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, Catwoman, and Talia al Ghul. Each has gadgets and abilities of his own. Right now, you are battling an entire rogue gallery of villains-Joker, Penguin, Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, Bane… the whole squad.

A huge feature or win these days is two-player local co-op offline play, and NO microtransactions. Custom difficulty settings are also present, including Caped Crusader, Dark Knight mode, and maybe more, to really challenge even the most hardcore players.

Everything bat-related is at your disposal from Bat Wings through Bat Grapple glider launcher… Also, there’s Batmobile and Batcycle driving throughout the city. There’s a fully working Batcave that you get to customize by way of displaying vehicles, trophies, collectibles, and even a ton of wearable Batsuits. They’ve shown suits from The Batman, The Dark Knight, Golden Age, 1966 TV show, Batman ’89, and even Rainbow Batman. This is going to be one runway!

From the reaction point of view, the vibes online were mostly positive. One player said that “The amount of time I am going to sink into this game is about to be CRAZY,” and that is quite true. Another one was like, “Yeah just give me that pre-order link already,” vibes everywhere. There are debates on the Arkham Asylum design as well, with people wishing for something along the Arkham campaign style.

Then there was a complete sideline about other LEGO games. Some Dutch players were wondering how LEGO LOTR was good since it mixed visual comedy with spoken audio from the films, and somehow some people ended up really learning the LOTR story via the LEGO game than through the movies, which is hilarious but sort of makes sense. They also mentioned LEGO Star Wars (2007) as iconic, along with Lego Pirates and the original Batman.

Wait-what was I saying? Oh, right. The game is insane looking. It’s like TT Games took everything everyone loved about the Arkham series, everything everyone loved about LEGO games, and just smashed them together. In a good way. Also, since this is going to have an original story and is not just an adaptation of a movie, it has caught some players off guard. Somebody said, “hang on, it’s an original story and not a ripoff of the movies? the trailer made it look like a movie spoof,” but no, it stands on its own.

That 2026-date feels like such a distance, but really? With all they are promising, it could well be worth it. Full open world Gotham, Arkham combat, co-op, no microtransactions, tons of characters and gigs…this might be the all-encompassing LEGO Batman experience, maybe even the Batman game for players who aren’t too serious. Now, should we just survive two years of insane waiting?
