The release date for the Contra: Rogue Corps is just around the corner. And Konami Digital Entertainment is trying to build the hype by releasing a teaser clip showing the local co-op gameplay.
The gameplay trailer was shared by IGN on Aug. 30. Based on the comments, however, it would have been better for Konami to just wait for the release date. One commenter remarked that the game looked worse than he initially thought. Another replied that it’s from Konami so expectations should be tempered.
Another commenter suggested that Contra: Rogue Corps is redundant because there’s already Blazing Chrome. To which another user replied, that Blazing Chrome is 100 times better compared to the upcoming game.
Contra: Rogue Corps jumps right into the timeline following the events of Contra III: The Alien Wars back in 1992. You will find yourself in the middle of the Damned City. It’s not a name to be taken lightly considering that people literally go insane just by going there.
You will play one of the four classic characters of Contra.
The Gentleman – An alien bug who takes pride in being cultured
Kaiser – A cyborg remnant from the Alien Wars that has been rebuilt
Hungry Beast – A giant panda with the brilliant brain to fit his brawns
Ms. Harakiri – An assassin who is carrying around a parasitic alien
These characters are bounty hunters, treasure hunters, and mercenaries. If you can afford their services, they have no moral compunction to do what must be done.
The run and gun game, with a top-down isometric view, also features weapons with unlimited ammo. However, you have to check for the heat meter, which will drastically affect how you control your character. You can easily upgrade the weapons, as well as the ammunition. Each of the characters also has their own special abilities that can be used when they’re backed against the corner. You can also use a bomb to clear the area when you find yourself surrounded by the enemy.
The Contra: Rogue Corps, however, is a side-scroller, a style that Konami has very limited experience in. Based on the comments, people already dislike the gameplay. Based on the trailer, the whole scene is chaotic, and the characters can even get lost in the weapon effects. PCGamer suggested that Neo Contra and Contra: Legacy of War looked better than this one.
Contra: Rogue Corps is set to launch on Sept. 24 on the PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch.
