Insomniac Games has dropped an immense Nostalgia Bomb on Twitter over which Resistance 2 fans haven’t quite fallen. The studios posted an enigmatic line taken from the 2008 PS3 shooter: “It’s him, Nathan… It’s Daedalus,” sparking immediate speculation about a possible remake or remaster for contemporary consoles. The tweet set the series fans ablaze with pleading for a comeback, accompanied by many voices labeling it as among the more underrated shooters of the past.

So, what exactly is Resistance 2? For those who never really made a firm grip on the PS3 era, it is the second chapter in Insomniac’s alternate history sci-fi series in which the human race struggles against alien invasion known as Chimera. The game was well known for a beautifully scripted campaign, insane co-op missions, and multiplayer wherein people would grind hours for a 10K kill trophy. Like, literally, people went for this game for hundreds of hours.

The responses to Insomniac’s tweet crystallize more or less into a fan letter for the series. One user by the name of Chimeran_Hybrid left no stone unturned: “Everything about it! The campaign (played it so many times), co-op, played many hours of it & i put in countless hours in MP for that 10K kill trophy. I Plantinumed the game (my first ever Plat trophy). R2 is where my online gaming career started. Love it & miss it so much.”

And he’s far from alone. Several users mentioned that the 8-player co-op missions are legitimately legendary. Ben Grigsby (@WeirdestWizard) called it the “most underrated co-op modes ever,” while Collin Crowder plainly said, “The 8 player co-op missions for sure,” as if the question hadn’t even been asked. Meanwhile, David_Payan2 shared a clip of the Leviathan fight accompanied by nothing but a 😌 emoji-that was legendary if you already knew.

Here’s the interesting bit-everybody-and-their-mother wanting a remake. Pretty much every reply is either “remake when?” or “bring it to PS5, please.” JojoPS971 asked outright, “Resistance Remake is coming? 👀,” while kynutsukyo composed a loud announcement with capital letters and bounced, “Remaster of the trilogy NOW.” Even Chris Penwell, alongside PenwellWrites, chimed in, “I wish PlayStation would just remaster these PS3 games,” which… same, Chris. Same.

The demand is obviously there, but then there’s that one reply which kills the hype. User mrsundaynightt replied to someone asking for the series return with, “Series didn´t sell well enough unfortunately,” which… ouch. That perhaps might even be the reason we haven’t seen a new Resistance game since 2011 with Resistance 3. But then again, there are remakes for games that didn´t sell well initially, so… there’s hope, isn’t there?

What is crazy, though, is how many people actually have memories of this game. Zorgolong shared, “First game I ever played after getting a PS3,” to which NaysGameOpinions said, “Medics stand up! ✊🏼,” and PlayStation Nostalgia commented, “The co op modes were so fun!” And yes, they really were.

Weapons had to be brought up since Insomniac has regularly been known for crazy guns, and Resistance 2 hosted seriously weird alien tech firearms! Yet some praise for the story even sneaked in, with ShallowForge stating simply, “I enjoyed the story,” and El_Fenomeno1105 complimenting him by adding, “The campaign was such a step up from the first game.”

Now, that’s the real question: what the hell is Insomniac doing tweeting about Resistance 2 now? Obviously, they’re busy with Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine; they don’t just sit around reminiscing about old games for no reason. Maybe someone over there is feeling nostalgic, or it could be some sort of plant for a larger reveal. Sony’s been all about remastering classics lately, and Resistance would be ideal for that strategy.

There were even players pleading for temporary server restoration. PSPlayGaming’s Adam pleaded for “Flip the servers back online for a bit of Specter Team co-op,” which, great in theory, but obviously not happening. Still, the idea of players wanting to relive multiplayer states plenty regarding how good it was.

There practically hasn’t been a thing newsworthy concerning the Resistance for more than ten years now, but passion is still abound. If nothing else, the tweet lets everyone know there’s still a passionate following willing to jump right back into the Chimera fight. Whether that would be the remaster collection or a full-fledged reboot is a discussion left for later, but the studio definitely got the conversation going.

Resistance 2 was every bit a sign of the times, with online still burgeoning, co-operative gaming started becoming really big, and shooters attempted some fresh ideas. It might not have been a very big seller, but it sure has left an impression in many players, and judging by this tweet, they are keen to jump back in anytime Insomniac looks to dust this world off.

Maybe we’ll get to hear something during the next PlayStation Showcase? Or perhaps it was just a throwback tweet for easy karma. It’s good publicity for older games and the communities still keeping the spirit alive. Well, now that all that is out of the way, I have got to do a grand binge on Resistance 2 gameplay videos on YouTube for that wonderful nostalgia hit.
