The initial celebratory tweet including the Spider-Man PS5 hashtag from Insomniac Games is quickly overshadowed by the explosion of responses. Within minutes, the comment section becomes bombarded with fireworks of game wishes, demands, and complaints. It is incredible how a short “WOO! IT’S FRIDAY” can summon such energy from the gaming community.
Jonny, who immediately appears in the comments, is pitching a completely new multiplayer Spider-Man game. “Just let us webswing together and stop small crimes, and the money will print itself,” is the one line he gives to his entire idea, and honestly? The idea doesn’t sound bad at all. Co-op web-swinging New York? I’m in. But then there is Henry, who has spent the entire time reminding others that the next DLC is “coming soon” and has been ever so slightly delayed. The patience is wearing thin, apparently.
There is always the Venom faction to cause a stir. First, with no attempts at politeness, TAMH demands “Venom game pls.” AmkoIt then drags everything down by responding with “we all know you guys are NOT making a Venom game,” and the tipped shoe speaks louder than words. Naturally, the Wolverine “fix me” comments follow. Marquise Elroy and BOSSPOOL are vehemently requesting updates on the Wolverine game, while MrKelsGame wordplays the title with, “you can’t spell Wolverine without W and I,” which is clever but, marketing-wise, quite desperate.
Kermit TF’s far from polite. While calling for Insomniac’s attention, they throw the accusation that this “dead game” has been “living off the hype” and demand a release for the alleged DLC that “should have come out ages ago” because “it’s been almost 3 years!” The rage doesn’t stop there. We get a whole different rant over the PC port from VamosReal, where he tells Insomniac to ignore all the “PeeCee crap” and start working on the PS5 Pro version, dropping Sony higher-ups into the conversation. The passion is… intense.
Even with the rants, appreciation is quite loud. GAM3S.GG looks forward to some weekend gaming, while Brendyn Bouchard comments, “Okay this is a good gif 🤣🤣,” so while some negativity is present, the players’ desire to know more, be it news, games, or products, is louder.
What is strange to me is how the community responds to a Friday tweet in such numbers. Insomniac’s reputation due to their Spider-Man titles is undoubtedly good. The goodness, however, comes with a set of high expectations. There is a heated discussion about what to do next, with everyone voicing their opinions. Whether it is the Venom spin-off, updates on Wolverine, or even fixing the PS5 Pro version, the community is yelling, “Give us whatever is next!”
That said, the community does have a reason to be demanding. The PS5’s Spider-Man games have been nothing short of amazing. With such games, gamers are certainly justified in craving more. While such requests may seem like a lot, gamers always seem to have a short memory. Sure, a studio may grab their attention with one great game, but before you know it, the fans are already clamoring for an immediate sequel. Maintaining the hype while managing the expectations is indeed a tough job.
Insomniac’s tweet, for better or worse, did serve its primary purpose — it ignited the discussion. Granted, some of the discussions hit the mark of being overly harsh or a little bit annoying, but it could be the only critique based on the fact that the players are so immersed in the world they created. Hopefully, actual news will drop soon to relieve the frustrations because, after that, the comments section is a rollercoaster of hopes, complaints, and a hint of gratitude for the perfectly chosen gif.
