Surprise launches are suddenly a thing. In fact, it was a bit of a surprise to find out about surprise launches, but today Hopoo Games and Gearbox Publishing, in what they are calling a surprise launch, has announced that one of their most popular indie titles is now available for the PlayStation 4.

Risk of Rain 2 is now available for download on the PlayStation Store. Risk of Rain 2 was first released way back in 2013 as a classic roguelike with tons of freshness added in. The game was praised for its use of innovation and themes in what is perhaps the oldest type of game in existence. Finally, Risk of Rain 2 can be played again for owners of the PlayStation 4.

And it is not just another rerelease. Hopoo Games has entirely remade the game and added dozens of extras to fans of the game and its series.

The first game was only a 2D action game, but the new title is fully 3D. Of course, this means there are tons of massive changes in the gameplay. But Hopoo says they have ensured the original spirit of the roguelike remains intact. One of their main goals was to keep as close to the core of the original gameplay and maintain a feeling of similarity between the new game and its 2013 original.

There will be some additional features to the game too. So do not be surprised if you end up seeing some new quests, items, updates to the storyline, or other subtle additions to the game.

The story of Risk of Rain 2 follows a group of survivors in science fiction fantasy title. The group winds up falling onto a planet after their ship is destroyed and they are forced to fight through the destructive wildlife to escape the hostile world. In the meantime, there are tons of upgrades to find, items to scavenge, and areas to explore.

Hopoo acknowledges that many players will find Risk of Rain 2 to be especially challenging. But that is all in the design. This roguelike is designed to challenge serious players looking for a bit of old-school action fun.
