The gaming industry is all aflutter after PlayStation massively dropped a bomb yesterday by announcing that the next State of Play would be setting the stage for an extended presentation of Ghost of Yōtei, the hottest sequel to Ghost of Tsushima. The thing will start at 2:00 PM PT, and pandemonium has broken loose-they are either for the hype, against it, or just simply go nuts.
Let’s dissect what little we know at this moment. The Spirit of Play tweet teases a deep dive into Atsu’s journey for revenge, indicating we will finally see proper gameplay footage and story at least. By all accounts, Ghost of Tsushima was a masterpiece with utterly beautiful visuals, tight-as-hell combat, and an emotionally weighing story. High expectations now follow with the next game.
The replies! Chaotic. There are gamers already claiming it to be ruined before they have seen any kind of real footage of the game. Burner Man (@RupertPupkin36) stated it bluntly: “Ruined the series ‼️‼️‼️‼️,” while HeavyHonkers (@halfpintnofun) tore into the weird obsession to call games “woke” without playing them first: “Can we at least see the gameplay first before writing it off?”
Then, there were debates, whether this game would be able to compete against the first one. Rickn7 (@Rick75209255) said it bluntly: “Going to be tough competing with the first game. Was so good.” And honestly? That is fair. Ghost of Tsushima set the bar so high, but Sucker Punch, as a studio, has a pretty good record of second installments (inFamous 2 is a prime example).
That being said, no gaming debate is truly finished without some bashing about console wars. Looks like the Xbox side is feeling the pulse with Unknowngizmo (@UnknowngizmoYT) stating, “It just really suck to be an Xbox fan in this day and age.” PlayStation fans such as Connor Pike (@ConnorPike_23), meanwhile, crowed: “Us Playstation fans do cause we have another GOTY contender way better than Xbox.” Can’t we all just enjoy games?
There are some crazy requests being made by some, Zebedee J. (@ZebedeeJ) imploring, “Please just no modern day shit. I wanna be immersed in feudal Japan.” While others just keep throwing nonsense jabs about it. Akira49 (@Akira4913) began going on one about the voice actress, calling her “MC Feminist” and saying they won’t financially support this game. Like, dude, I don’t think we’ve even heard her performance yet.
Amid all the chaos, there remain equally many excited fans. Oldman Joey (@OldmanJoey77) posted a statement encapsulating it all: “I am so ready for this.” That goes for me too, Joey.
So what to say about it? Tomorrow’s State of Play is unarguably a must-watch for anyone who enjoyed Ghost of Tsushima or just drinks in all the messy drama. Will Ghost of Yōtei go on to justify the hype? Or will it drown and just get messier? 2:00 P.M. PT is the answer. Just try and keep calm before declaring it as ‘Dead on Arrival.’
One thing is sure: Sucker Punch is taking one hell of a risk, and that is what everyone is talking about. Whether it will be a masterpiece or an abomination, Ghost of Yōtei is already the most talked-about game for the year. And honestly? That’s pretty cool.
