Epic Games decided to bring out an emote, probably one with real value. For 500 V-Bucks, players can grab a hilarious emote rendition of Blur’s ‘Song 2’ and witness some… let’s just say… peculiar reactions from the community.
From the very first moment, this emote, which one can buy for laughter, seems to bizarrely climb into Class S or something along those lines. If funny comments were to be bought, this would be the priciest: “‘It looks like a drunk white guy dancing at a wedding’ boreman piewhistle.” Honestly? He’s not wrong. This animation, the least of which can be described as awkward flailing, is like watching a character who’d had a little too much down at the open bar but just had to hit the dance floor.
But for some reason, while still really ridiculous, people really do love it. HurleyGang10 defended the emotes, saying, “I’m definitely in the minority here but I love how goofy they look,” then went on to say, “that’s exactly how it ends up when someone plays rock songs when everyone’s drunk.” Fair enough folks. Sometimes the best times in real-world parties are those goofy, clumsy dances; so why not in Fortnite?
Interestingly, somehow people started learning little snips of music history from the replies. Everyone was utterly confused; many thought it was a Gorillaz song because the voice was so similar. Paulson101 tweeted, “It sounds JUST like 2D from the Gorillaz 🤔 Odd.” And like, he was not wrong about the voice similarity, but that was Damon Albarn who is the lead singer for both bands. Yep, mind-blowing, right?
Thus, it quickly turned into an impromptu battle on who was to be right regarding the music. ClintE___ said with no hesitation, “Fun fact this is the same band as gorillaz,” which, no dude, not even close. Many had to jump in and explain that while, yes, same singer, Blur and Gorillaz are completely different bands. JinxViPowder69 put it bluntly: “Nope…different band, same singer. Get it right.” The explanation that really sealed the deal was when endlessl1ght asked, “are you gonna call the band ‘wings’, ‘the beatles’ just because paul mccartney is in it?” Which, honestly, is a fair point.
On the other hand, some players are just enjoying the fact that rock music is finally being represented in the game. Witchesbrew pointed out: “Notice how its the best selling emote in the shop rn? Epic the fans crave rock music.” Yes, they are right – despite the almost awful dance animation, players are starving for more rock and alternative music represented in Fortnite emotes.
Not everybody is thrilled with the way it was done, though. Kerite130953 considers that “animations that dance while playing guitar and bass are cooler,” which, I agree, would be pretty damn cool. These guys doing air guitar for real instead of this drunk uncle.” Ztinky666 was having none of it, stating that “Emotes of playing instruments would get boring pretty quick imo.” But Shadegh0st clapped back with, “Still would sell more than what we currently got.”
The whole conversation just goes to show how split the namesake Fortnite community can get on these music emotes. Some players want authentic instrument animations, others want goofy dancing, while everybody has an opinion about which songs they want in there. All that is certain, though, is that players want MORE rock music in the game, and through their V-Bucks, they’re making this dance emote one of the top-selling items now.
It was also worth mentioning that quite a few felt this emote should have been free or at least part of the music pass since past music collaborations saw multiple songs from multiple artists. Venomexa2 just outright asked, “Wasn’t it free?” Nevertheless, others debated on whether it should have been in the Gorillaz music pass over being sold on its own.”
In the end, the numbers say otherwise-players are buying this, goofy dancing and all, confirming that these weird, awkward dances are just what people want. That feeling of being at a concert where everyone is just having fun and not caring about how they look is exactly what gaming should already be about.
So whether you think it looks like a drunken wedding guest or exactly how it would look in a rock concert, the Blur ‘Song 2’ emote is selling like crazy in the item shop. Hopefully, this will trigger some thinking at Epic for some more rock music options in the future-with better dancing animations, of course. But honestly? For now, the messy ones work just fine.
