For some players, the moment they had been eagerly waiting for finally arrived. FORTNITE HAS GOT THE MOTHMAN. You got it right. The well-known cryptid got into the item shop, and the insider HYPEX announced everyone about his purchase. The skin is already available, and HYPEX even talked about a creator code if you would like to support him while acquiring the new item. What has been the response? It has been a pretty much mixed one, at least.
Let’s take a look at the issue. First off, there is the Mothman skin which is such an extravagant design with a body that is constantly changing the “pencil” effect and this has been the main cause of the dispute. Some gamers are absolutely on the side of the skin, calling it cool and unique. The others? No, not at all. One gamer, Kyle The Geek, said that the moving effect is “too annoying for me to consider a purchase.” He wished there was a style that could switch it off, and one more user supported him, saying it was odd that there was no option to turn it off. Well, that’s one debated point right from the start.
Following that, the discussion about the pricing of the skin came up. The usual subject always simmering. One user said that “Epic has begun recently to separate items instead of simply increasing the prices” and he referred to that case while some comments were discussing the price arrangement. Long story short, the total is the same, but now you can either buy just the skin or just the backbling if you prefer, which some people even consider a better deal. You can get the entire set for 1500 V-Bucks, which is quite normal for a legendary skin these days. But then again, you know how it is, you always have at least one person complaining about the price anyway.
Also, with every new cosmetic update, it brings back the demand for past skins. The replies were full of users asking Ghostface to make an appearance before Halloween is over. Someone else was crying for Beach Bomber to come back. And then there was that guy who was just upset that Mothman got released instead of the zombie football skins; he posted, “WTF is this dogshit release the football skins alr.” That was harsh, yet that’s how the Fortnite community is—very passionate and loud about their wants.
Besides, the character’s identity was also put to question. One person asked, “What is that character called?” and it’s funny because the answer is right there in the tweet. Mothman! The mythical creature of West Virginia folklore, mostly seen as a prophet of doom. But in Fortnite, he is just a guy with wings and a weird, although disputable, visual effect. The hype was powerful among some players with one saying “Mothman vibes unlocked,” while another said “so ugly.” The duality of humanity, just in the comments.
A few more brief mentions appeared as well. One person said that a new character “Spice” would be available on the 29th, so that is something to look forward to. Another user thought Mothman’s demeanor resembled Sora’s from Kingdom Hearts, which led to a cute little debate. And surely, there was the unavoidable Chainsaw Man reference since that manga is everywhere right now. The community really does put all their interests in one place.
So, what is the verdict on Mothman? He is weird and people are still uncertain about their feelings towards him – whether they love him or they hate him. The moving pencil effect is the main point of contention and it is hard to believe they didn’t include a style without it. But for the evening monsters who relate to those or for the ones wanting just something different to have as their hidden treasure, he is right there waiting. Just check the item store and put code HYPEX if you feel generous. Whether he becomes a fan favorite or slowly loses his charm and fades away is yet to be determined, but people are surely discussing him. That’s usually a success amidst all the happenings in battle royale games. The only thing left for us to do is to wait and see what Epic has in store for the rest of the Halloween season. Maybe Ghostface will finally come back. Or the football skins. Who knows?
For PlayStation and Xbox players, the Mothman skin is available now.
