Fortnite has pulled off yet another random and strange crossover event, promoting the repackaged in-game item tied to her track “Oblivion.” The plot twist? First-time buyers get the item for free from the webstore. Yeah, free.99. The collaboration dropped with no advance notice, sending people into a frenzy trying to figure out if this was the real deal or just yet another wild Fortnite rumor.
The emotes play “Oblivion” in the background and, to put it simply, it’s really cool. The emote shines right away and loudly with its bright, flashy, and utterly un-Fortnite approach. Yet, there is a level of theatre involved therein; some gamers find it too mid, while others are losing their minds over the fact that Grimes, of all people, exists inside a game.
The reactions have… been at best mixed. “I love Grimes but wtf is this shit,” says an anonymous user, marking the genuine mood. Another one comments on the disco skin texture of the emote as being “major disgust.” Char. So opposite, some are loving the fact that artists keep on collaborating with Fortnite, even if the emotes start feeling a bit overdone.
More Cyberpunk 2077 connections were made. Grimes voices a character in the game named Lizzy Wizzy, and her acting was non-Academy. Some of the players returned to the joke, was-her-Fortnite-emote-probably-an-upgrade?
That is good enough for free. If one hasn’t bought anything from Fortnite’s web store before, there is an excellent opportunity to grab anything for free. Head toward the link in that tweet, make a purchase, anything really, even cheapest is alright, and the Grimes “Oblivion” emote will crossover into your inventory.
Next thing people started speculating about: Naturally, being Fortnite, that collab has evidently ignited theories about what’s next. One player went full detective, connecting the dots in between Grimes, Caroline Polachek’s album, and existing Fortnite Festival emotes to predict that Polachek is likely to be the next featured artist. Honestly? At this point, really wouldn’t surprise me.
So, there you have it: another regular day, another crazy Fortnite crossover. Whether you are here for the music, the memes, or the free stuff, it’s definitely worth being there to witness it, if only for the backlash or praise. And who knows? Maybe this is only the beginning of more Grimes action in Fortnite. Or maybe it’s a one-and-done. Either way, free emote. Can’t argue with that.
