To all of you DOOM devotees out there, strap in tight because id Software has just unleashed upon the red-eyed viewing world a dynamic wallpaper for DOOM: The Dark Ages that is surely perfection in desolation. An innocuous tweet from the studio read, “Sooo… new Home screen, anyone?” with a link to the background, suggesting that something desktop-worthy might just appease fans while they wait for the game to tear through their waking world, like a bloody ripper.
For those who weren’t clued in, DOOM: The Dark Ages was quietly announced just short weeks before this wallpaper release, and ever since, the hype train has been running at full throttle. Just another small tease to keep you on your toes. Wallpaper or otherwise, anything DOOM is bound to be intense.
As for the art: plain DOOM-dark, gritty, with a heavy metal hell vibe for all those desktop lovers out there who want their setup to scream, “I live for chaos.” A cool little wallpaper or not, in the end, we all know it’s a big-time take-it-or-leave-it.
But when’s the real question-when? The Dark Ages are said to be going back to the series’ roots (so we hear) with an overtly medieval flavor resulting in all of the demon-slaying mayhem. Picture DOOM Eternal and even nastier with more swords and castles, probably a whole lot more fire.
And do you remember: We’re talking about DOOM. The franchise does not whisper. If the dynamic background is this intense, just imagine the actual game-explosions? Most definitely. Gore? Well, obviously. Music that gets your adrenaline rushing? Oh, you better believe it.
So if you’re itching to give a demonic touch to your PC setup, grab hold of that background. It is just something small, but sometimes it is those little things that will keep us going until the day of the big launch. And for DOOM, the wait is going to be worth it.
Till then, blast some Mick Gordon songs, admire your new wallpaper, and daydream of the day when we could jump back into hell again-but medieval style.
