The marketers at Devolver Digital had once again organized a “special announcement.” By special, I mean completely bonkers in an excellent way. Baby Steps is the newest game they will be putting through PC and PS5 channels on September 23. That name should be enough to sell it in any court: “breast milk slide.”

All it said was, “There is a breast milk slide in Baby Steps” and then put the date and a bottle emoji for good measure. Classic Devolver: No hints explanation, no context, just chaos. The game community response was a collective “What the hell,” probably the ideal reaction Devolver wanted.

That slick advertisement had him put in the spotlight with games controversies—especially Blizzard-side. “Slide leads to Blizzard HQ,” “Now, that’s some Serious Blizzard lore,” flowed through the replies, which…Okay, I admit, that’s funny. And weirdly fitting and timely from that company, you almost want to believe it was planned.

Some reacted with utter confusion, “What, in the fuck, is this” from LordFluffyBuns is a good one-liner to sum up the feelings initially felt by most. And then, a few were ready for it: “I’m so excited for this bizarre fun time,” said Paula Vaynshteyn, and honestly… same. Hence, for the weird, I’m here.

From that cascade of reactions, we ended up with tons of jokes about whether this exists for pre-order (probably not, let’s just be honest), is this some Gen Z thing older gamers wouldn’t comprehend, and will this be considered for Game of the Year? With how these awards have been the past couple years, I wouldn’t even bat an eye.

Well then, what is Baby Steps all about? Well, from what we have to gather, this is some sort of physics game where you are a baby taking, well, baby steps. The extremely weird breast milk slide might serve as an obstacle or an environmental feature. Devolver also linked a YouTube clip of the game in all its glory, so it’s going to be something great.

The reactions were a mixed bag – some people worried about the developers’ mental state (“Are you… are you ok?”), some went with Blizzard jokes right away, some appreciated the pure physics and ragdoll potential. “As a lover of physics and ragdoll, this is gold” said FEDEXRLD, and they’re not wrong. There’s something beautiful about ridiculous physics in games.

Wait, what was I saying? Oh yeah – the breast milk slide. Definitely one of those concepts that gets you going for a double take when you read it for the first time. Like is this real? Is this some kind of joke? But then you remember it’s Devolver Digital and yeah this is just properly what they’d publish. They’ve built their whole brand on weird, boundary-pushing games that make people talk, and this one contributes the same.

Funny enough, the timing is perfect with the whole recent discourse around the “coomers,” and sexualization in games. One reply called it out: “Game devs: We hate coomers so we make all our women ugly now. Also game devs: LIKE OUR FETISHES OR ELSE.” Which… okay, that’s a take. Not sure if a breast milk slide qualifies as a fetish, but hey, everyone’s got their thing, I guess.

What is actually wild is how quickly the community ran with this. Within minutes there were Blizzard jokes, Only Up comparisons (“Looks like Only Up! rip off”), and queries about a Switch 2 version. The internet moves fast, but when something this bizarre drops, gaming Twitter moves at light speed.

That being said, it looks like Baby Steps will go down as one more classic Devolver experience: weird, funny, and probably way too entertaining for its own good. I’m sure the breast milk slide is just one of many instances of weirdness in there, and I cannot wait to see what other bizarre features they’ll throw in. September 23rd is not coming soon enough for this level of chaos.

On the bright side, it got everyone talking. Mission accomplished, Devolver. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go process the fact that “breast milk slide” has just been cemented into my gaming vocabulary. What a time to be alive.
