At Bungie, while at GCX, the panel on “Threads of Fate: Exploring Destiny 2‘s Narrative Craft” was held, and the responses were the furthest from unanimous. Half of the Bungie community, eager to wrap their minds around the lore, found this moment apt to air some of their discontent concerning the present state of the game. Classic Destiny community moment, right?
The panel to be hosted by the Destiny 2 team promised an exciting deep-dive into the storytelling craft behind the recent game expansions. Narrative has probably always been one of Destiny’s stronger traits. From the plotting of Savathûn to Xivu Arath’s militarism and all that good stuff. But this is also when all hell broke loose in the barbs section.
Some players were all-in for it: @psalmlab tweeted, “Definitely tuning in for such a stacked panel! 🙌🏾” Then the response from @AndyMarch1969 was counterproductive with, “At this point I hope you get booed off stage!” Ouch! Dual personality of Destiny fans, man.
And then came the whining. The whining! From missing Strange Coins (@CasualXG4mer) to crashing (@denzel1342), these fans kept it real in a way unlike before. @Temperistic was straight up describing the most boring ever, while @KRONK47614613 basically acknowledged the narrative is okay, but I have no reason to even play this anymore. And possibly, mentioning one of the complainants about that Contest Mode exploit: @MythicalXB and @SirGarvin, were not really happy.
Then there was some measure of sunny optimism from @AmandaNWass who said, “All those whom complain about little glitches never played and enjoyed most games. Unless the game is broken or unplayable, I will enjoy it, glitches and all.” Preach.
Meanwhile, @FIERCEDEGAMER wanted more Savathûn lore (same), and @KingAdnyeus was screaming for username changes. Priorities, people.
What, pray, should one then glean from all this? The narrative team for Destiny 2 does have quite a fine set of tapestry weavers, but the bugs, the cheaters, the grind, and whatever else is afflicting the game manages to drive quite a good chunk of the player base away. Are these being addressed? Who knows. What sure has become certain is that Destiny players will never miss the chance of speaking their minds. And they speak it loud!
Were you not able to make it to the panel? Well, the replies would definitely get you caught up on the drama. I swear, it’s almost as entertaining as the lore itself.
