The Call to Arms event will end with the closing of the first Devrim Kay’s Call to Arms event in-game Destiny 2 the weekly reset. Players will have just a very short period to gather their teams, increase the modifiers, and thus get higher points before the event closes. The overall response from the players though has been horrendous, to say the least, it has been a mixture of mixed emotions, euphoria, anger, and complete bewilderment.
To explain what exactly is this all about, let’s define Call to Arms. It is a time-bound event wherein Guardians are participating in certain activities and they can stack modifiers to their scores in a way that the score becomes as high as possible. The main prize for those who get to the highest scoring tiers is a one-of-a-kind helmet. Still, as per complaints from players, the road to the helmet has been very harrowing.
Destiny 2 community has been very vocal regarding this event but not always on the good side. Player Michelle, for example, expressed doubt about the whole scoring system along with the Twitter post, “is it even possible to get 1% score in solo now if at 550 because of bug?” Michelle said she was going to 550 early in order to help her friends, but it looked like she was getting penalized for it. When you work so hard and put in all the time, it should not be the case of, “I am sorry.”
There is also the story of mike crews who after playing about 40-50 hours of the event and being active in carrying others was still not sure if he was awarded the helmet or if he was just another victim of the system. He even said that he would quit after 10000+ hours if he did not get the helmet. This is more than dedication, it bothers on quitting eventually.
The central issue seems to be the scoring system. There were quite a few players who claimed they had done everything right—killed the high-value target, completed the bonus objectives, and having much of the time left—and still, they found themselves with around 3 million points instead of the 6 million required for the top rewards. Another player, RedGiant, said that they had 7:20 already left on the clock with everything done and still hit only 3 million. He/she was wondering, “What else do I need to add 10%?”
The most fascinating bit is that there is a 15% score bonus for the players who have the season pass. The user justaddwatter drew attention on this issue, “I also don’t think that the 15% score bonus from owning the season pass should apply and I haven’t seen that anyone is talking about it.” That’s a really big plus and it might very well be the difference between whether one gets the helmet or not.
The player base is split on the matter of the event’s value. Other players, like Ron who found it just “okay” and wished Bungie would benefit from it, even suggested that they should “give us the ability to pick from All of the Modifiers for our activities ALL the time.” Meanwhile, TheOnlyTacsir did not take part and went so far as to term the event “boring” and lamented the recycled content.
But there are some good news! Some players were still able to score points even when the odds were not in their favor. Tizzly is one of them and he/she got points solo in both PvE and PvP activities, which shows that it is possible even for players who call themselves ‘low key dog shit’ in PvP. Then, voidhuntermain said that the event was good and even though it was bit hard, it was going to be locked in. He/She was so excited to see it again that he/she can’t wait.
The event has also provoked some discussions about game design that have been enlightening. Player xsmashx88x suggested that future events should offer “emblems at diff lvl’s or points so everyone can feel they earned something,” perhaps with an animated emblem for the top performers. This is a really nice suggestion as it would be giving a chance for more players to take parts in events that are competitive PvE.\
There have been questions regarding the rewards during the anniversary week, e.g. whether the pass for rewards would expire and with player xTHExEAGLE asking if the reward pass would expire or continue on CrypticAsden responded that they are “more likely to expire on Tuesday,” so the players have now to get their points put in.
The event has highlighted some of the challenges that Bungie faces in trying to balance content across PlayStation and Xbox platforms.
