The Trials of Osiris has become live this weekend in Destiny 2, and Bungie decided to tweet an announcement featuring the Cirrus Plaza map. The gamers have just reacted… well, something. Absolutely nothing that can be counted on for the hype of the return of Destiny’s very own competitive PvP.
Even from the start, the reaction was almost an absolute split. Some are just simply glad it is back, like this Vovô Leandro who responded with “🥹🥹 I love Teials” – cute autocorrect fail, it happens to the best of us. But from the moment you start scrolling online, things go downhill really fast, really… really fast.
The largest issue seems to be with the map itself. Cirrus Plaza! Oh boy. Metasthetic simply says, “Worst map ever🫠.” And there are others joining the chorus. Skonk goes on to question Bungie in turn: “Why has this map been in rotation so much since release, like do you guys think it’s a good map?” That is a very fair question. Some players feel the map selection itself is akin to Bungie giving the middle finger to the community after they have recently complained about how the game is going.
Except for the few who actually do appreciate it! I have to keep things fairly! James Portis | JPenumbra is one defender who writes, “I honestly dont hate this map. I think its perfect for for 3’s but thats just me. Id take this map over the pyramid ship or the throne world maps any day of the week.” So, at least one person out there is vibing with the Plaza layout. Good on him.
But Trials are also being despised. There’s been numerous complains. Stories about a bug in Trials are already there. Like Hero asking, “Skullbreakers still aren’t counting for gilding flawless?” That must’ve been the worst feelsbad moment for someone trying to gild their title this weekend.
And then there’s the reward system. NYCBIGDAVE was having a rough time: “Not worth it !!!! Just went to lighthouse (not flawless) and got one helmet 😂 WTF CMON!! Reward the people still playing the game. At least make the shit rewarding.” I gotta agree. Getting a helmet for a trip to the Lighthouse, even if it was non-flawless, sounds pretty disheartening. And it is these experiences that are pulling away the player base, making them question whether this is even somewhat worth their time.
Now, the solo queue experience is getting bashed, as well. Alexander being Alexander says: “Fix this shitty ass system for solo queue already! It’s a complete gamble going for 7 straight. Three games in a damn row with .1 players. And stop with these ass maps.” Yup, the struggle of solo-queuing in an environment designed for team play is real; it’s a constant headache for many.
Some of the larger issues are spilling over as well. Some raise other issues, while Fury states about its “sorry fkin state on Xbox.” Contrastingly, Sys is a little more specific: “Was the removal of DIM contraband rolls intentional; and if so, why? Especially without any warning of any kind.” This just shows how present-day Destiny 2 community frustrations go way beyond what’s on the map in Trials.
Even the simple act of Bungie tweeting the announcement found itself in need of sarcastic remarks. The Fourth Horseman Catalyst compared it to “advertising an old flip phone.” Pretty brutal but funny, too.
So, what’s Trials up to this weekend? Well, it’s live, on Cirrus Plaza, and the community… oh boy, is passionate about it, an understatement to say the least. Some are excited, but that is buried way down under mountain-high complaints about the map selection, rewards, bugs, and the overall state of the game’s PvP. Classic Destiny community moment; so much love for the game and a very heavy outburst of frustration at once.
Good luck to all brave souls who enter, Guardians. You might want to make sure you bring some extra salt for the rim of your margarita glass, for the matches themselves will be salty beyond measure. Perhaps the meta settles; perhaps teams learn the map; or maybe everybody just goes and whines about it on Twitter. That’s the Destiny cycle, baby.
